  • It wasn't the greatest episode. But it was ok with Jake's dad getting sick and Gray comes back.

First of all while i wrote the review for the last episode i didn't watch this one. I kinda knew that Gray was coming back and he so did. But still i don't know if i could still believe his story or not. This episode was not that bright, but Jake kissing Heather was nice. And the other moment was Jake's dad fell and he needed treatment and they didn't have it in Jericho. So now they are going to get the Medicine one way or another, i think this might be a good story line for the next episode. And Emily talked to his dad and he gave the car to Jake "as a present".moreless
  • In this episode we meet Jonah, Emily's father. The Mayor is sick, Gracie is capitalizing on being the only supplier left in town and Hawkins past is explored a little more. Also, in this episode Gray Anderson returns from Topeka.moreless

    "Good"
This episode was pretty good. Early on we meet Jonah, the local organized crime kingpin. He's done well, albeit in a way that is not terribly unique. His character does seem to be more real than the traditional gangster, and I appreciate the fact that he is more of an opportunist than megalomaniac. His introduction into the storyline sets in motion what promises to be a solution to the supply problem that Jericho will soon be having. It also functions as a good way to illuminate what happened in Jake and Emily's pasts.

When Gray Anderson returns, he tells the town about his exploits. Apparently he hitched a ride back to town on a FEMA truck carrying bottled water that got hijacked. Gray has more to him than I originally thought, as his character displays a subtlety that I can appreciate. At least in this episode he isn't an extreme character, which makes him more genuine.

Mimi has her breakdown in Stanley's front yard when she learns the extent of the devastation. I think that the scene could have had more of an impact, but I suppose that abject despair that comes with knowing that everyone and everything you know has been incinerated isn't easy to emote. I don't mind Mimi so much, but I think her role is a little stilted and aimless. At times she seems to be a drinker and an experienced gal, and at other times she seems obsessed with her button down IRS work. Dale (Oh, I have to talk about him) makes yet another gesture to try and win over Skylar. She trades in a jewelry box for diet soda, and when she learns (through Gray) that her parents may still be alive, she wants to get the box back. Gracie says no, and Dale decides that he has to now steal the box and quit his job. I want to shoot Dale and Skylar.

It's not just that I'm a bitter old man. It's because the writers have nothing that shows why these two people even like each other let alone really like each other. It is another flaw in modern writing where simple proximity equals love. If you are a male lead character and there is a cute female lead character, then it's almost assured that no matter how compatible you and she are, you'll end up in love. Personally, I rarely see the writers putting any effort into WHY these people fall in love, and so whenever I see one of these vapid love dramas I revolt. They are hardly even people. I mean, after watching this episode, tell me what all they have in common... nothing. Overall, this was a worthy episode, but it was far from perfect.moreless
  • Mitchell's friends come to get him and Johnston's flu takes a turn for the worse.

    9.0
    "Superb"
It could only be a matter of time before Jake's history came back to haunt him and it does: in the form of Mitchell's boss, Jonah who also happens to be Emily's dad! Not only that, he arrives in Jake's car which he has restored. When the sheriff's office refuses to release Mitchell, Jonah's men take him by force. Jake sees an opportunity with Jonah he's a thief, he can get things they'll need food, medicine, gas. The deal falls through and Jake tries to make things right with Jonah.

Mimi, trying to find some normalcy, starts doing paperwork but falls apart when Stanley tries to comfort her. Johnston collapses and desperately needs a type of medicine the town is out of. Jake and Eric immediately intend to go find it and the matriarch of the family says just one word: "Go." Her boys instantly obey. Heather, who's been nursing a crush on Jake, passionately kisses him. He's gonna break her heart. He won't mean to, but he's still in love with Emily and Heather's just not his type. Eric reluctantly asks Gray to be acting mayor until he returns. (That's a recipe for disaster!)

Surprisingly, Emily is the one who fixes things with Jonah, since his one condition was he wanted to see her. After a very tense first meeting, she returns with Jake's car and the food that Jonah stole.

    Last thoughts:
    - Gray returns and reports FEMA is active and that New York survived but Washington didn't. The KS explosion was in Lawrence, which happens to be the home town for the boys in my other favourite series, Supernatural.
    - Gracie's shop has become a trading post, since money is now worthless, they've switched to barter.
    - Hawkins learned that Darcy was involved with another man in the four years he was gone. Darcy asks him why he didn't just take the kids, but took her too? What a twisted little family. This new world could give them a second chance.
    - This show's got some great one-liners: Stanley to Mimi: "I see you're awake, it must be noon."

Major new character, new personal crisis and some much needed info on the outside world.moreless
  • Ok, I'm a dork, but...

    9.0
    "Superb"
I was SOOOOO excited when Jake and Heather kissed!! I mean seriously. Come on. I like Emily and all, but I'm definitely a Jake and Heather fan. Anyhoo, more about the actual episode... I like the development/complications with Stanley and Mimi's relationship, Dale and Skylar's growing bond (I mean... awwww! when he gave back the jewelry box? Who didn't think that was cute?), Eric and April's deteriorating relationship now with a kid thrown in, and above all else, Johnston could be DYING. Really. I loved it. Plenty of separate plots to keep it fresh, but not so many that you got lost. One of my faves!!moreless
  • A time to wheel and deal for the betterment of Jericho!

    7.2
    "Good"
Mitchell is willing to make a deal about the food if he gets his way with Jake. Jake and Emily do their part to save the town. As the town survival's depends on staying pulled together we can see that fractures are developing among the townspeople as represented by Gray. He was in it for himself period. The character is going to prove to be bad I think for the town.

It's not unusual for the town to begin to fall apart in a post nuclear world. But it's time for the writers to start dealing with basic issues as well as the major ones.moreless

    • Jake: (After Heather rambles about the car) Anything else? Heather: (kisses him. pauses.) Aren't you going to leave now? Jake: I'm waiting for Eric. (Heather walks away awkwardly)

    • Mimi: I found some stale cornflakes in the pantry and since no one else seemed to be eating them... Stanley: Oh well knock yourself out here you want a little milk with those? (Pours some milk into her bowl from the pail he just brought in.) There ya go. Mimi (taking a bite): Ew. It's still warm. Stanley: Yeah it was even warmer when it was in the cow ten minutes ago. Mimi: And that will do it for the cornflakes. You did that on purpose didn't you? Stanley: Yes I did.

    • Jake: Mallow cups. (snaps fingers) That's what they were called. Eric: God I loved those. Jake: They were the best. I always got so much more candy than you remember? Eric: Cause you cheated! You'd trick or treat the whole neighborhood in one costume and then you'd go do it again in another.

    • Jake: Emily. Emily: Why are you talking to him? Jake: It's ok. It doesn't have anything to do with you. Emily: He's my father, it has everything to do with me.

    • Jake: That's my car. Jonah: You left it out there. Jake: Yeah but it was destroyed. Jonah: Lovingly restored. I told you there was a lot of good stuff on the roads. This one I didn't even have to fight for. Besides, she was mine first.

    • Eric: Uhh what the hell. Is that what we're driving? Jake: Yeah, I mean it's not actually a... Yeah.

    • Gray: Are you going somewhere? Eric: My father needs medication, stuff we don't have in town. Jake and I are going to Rogue River to find it. Gray: Are sure that that's a good idea? Eric: Not really. Gray: You be careful out there. You don't stop for anything. You don't even slow down. I mean it. Eric: We'll be back before morning. Do you mind keeping an eye on things here? Gray: Of course, don't worry about it.

    • Emily (to Jonah): You wanted to talk. Let's talk.

    • Jimmy: Ooh. You scared me. That's a good ghost!

    • Gail: What are you doing? Johnston: What? Gail: You were cooling your thermometer in that glass of water. Weren't you? Johnston: No I wasn't. Fine, so what if I was, I'm tired of being babied. Gail: You have a temperature of 350 degrees. You are going to rest. You are going to take the pills that April gave you. You are going to admire this ridiculous pumpkin with me and then we are going to try to eat said pumpkin together because we use every part of the buffalo in this house. Is that understood? Johnston: Most of it.

    • Skylar: Please tell me that's diet. Dale: Cream soda. Skylar: There used to be a whole case of diet here! Gracie promised that she would hold on to it for me. Gracie: Not to worry dear. I tucked it away when we agreed on the price.

    • Heather: Watch out for giant irradiated ants out there. Jake: Always do.

    • Heather: I don't think this is such a good idea. Jake: No choice. Heather: Well, then at least let me do some work on the car. Jake: There's no time, I have to go now. What... wait, you said it was sturdy. Heather: Well, sturdy, yeah, but what if you need to outrun something? Jake: Why, how fast will it go? Heather: I don't know. Thirty, maybe forty miles an hour, best case, downhill, and not for very long. See, this is what I'm saying - maybe you should go on horseback. Jake: A horse is slower than that. Heather: A horse is less likely to explode. Jake: I'll take my chances.

    • Mitchell (singing): She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes. She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes. She'll be coming— Jimmy: Knock it off, Mitchell.

    • Heather: Is it inappropriate that I keep asking questions about him? Emily: Why would it be inappropriate? Heather: I don't know. Emily: Do you have a thing for Jake? Heather: No (Emily gives Heather a look) Okay, except, maybe, yes just a little bit. Emily: A little. Heather: I'm sorry, this is really weird Emily: It's not weird. Look, it was a long time ago. Just be careful, okay. Heather: Why? Emily: There's a lot of things about Jake you don't know, okay.

    • Jake: Hello, Jonah. Jonah: Jake. Been a long time.

    • Stanley: Oh, I see you're awake, must be noon. Mimi: I've been up for a while. Hey, close the front door. What, were you born in a barn? Were you born in a barn? Stanley: Almost a week you've been here and that joke's not getting any funnier.

    • Dale: Hey, did you hear? Skylar: Hear what? Dale: Mr. Anderson's back, he says New York is still there. Skylar: New York? My parents? Dale: They might be okay. Skylar: My parents. (cries and hugs Dale)

    • Jake: I can talk to Jonah. Gray: You can talk to Jonah? Find him--- Jake: He lived up to his end of the deal. Gray: And why the hell are you protecting this guy? Jake: I'm protecting this town. He can get things we're gonna need. Gray: What can he get? Jake: He can get food; he can get gas, he can get ammo. Could you get that stuff if we needed it tomorrow? Could you? 'Cause he can. We'll do this my way now. (takes gun away from Gray)

    • Jonah: I want to talk to Emily. Jake: She doesn't want to see you. Jonah: She blames me for Chris's death. Things might be different if she knew whose fault it really was. Jake: I didn't send him on that job, all right, you did. I tried to talk him out of it. Jonah: He needed a lookout; someone to watch his back. You left him alone. Jake: A lookout? He needed a father. Jonah: All right. Maybe it is time Emily learns the truth about what you did. Jake: I told her. I told her, I told her everything. Jonah: Did she forgive you? Jake: No. Jonah: Neither do I. Get her to see me, or I'll do business wherever the hell I please. Jake: I can't. Jonah: Then I guess we don't have a deal.

    • Gracie: Is there something you want to tell me? Dale: What do you mean? Gracie: That jewelry box is missing; did you steal from me, Dale? Say something. Dale: Why did you lie to her? Why did you tell her you didn't have the box? Gracie: We made a fair trade. I shouldn't have to explain myself to some spoiled little girl. Dale: You don't know her.

    • Skylar: Where are you staying tonight? Dale: A friend's house. Skylar: A friend's house? (looks sceptical) Come on. You can sleep on the couch at my place.

    • Stanley: You don't need to do all this, you know? Mimi: What the hell else am I going to do?

    • Jake: Remember that time we set the carpet in Dad's office on fire? All you had to do was stick to the story, we would've been fine. Eric: You wanted me to tell Dad that I had a seizure and knocked over his desk lamp.

    • Gray: Do we know anything about them? Where they been? What they know? (The new families in town) Eric: I don't think I like where this conversation is going, Gray.

    • Jonah: Looks like you forgot someone. Jake: Town said no to the deal with Mitch. How can I fix this?

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Episode title: Long Live the Mayor - The title of this episode is a play on a traditional proclamation made following the accession of a new monarch: The King is dead. Long live the King!

    • Heather: Watch out for giant irradiated ants out there. This would refer to the classic 1954 science fiction movie, Them!, in which ants grew to monstrous proportions after being irradiated by an atomic bomb explosion.

    • Gray Anderson discovers that one of the bombs was exploded in Lawrence, KS, not Kansas City. In the 1983 ABC TV-movie "The Day After", Lawrence, KS was the location of the first nuclear strike.

    • Gail Green said that they were going to eat the carved pumpkin after admiring it "Because we use every part of the buffalo". This alludes to the fact that Native Americans used the buffalo for more then one thing. The buffalo and all its parts were used for food, clothes, glue, toys and numerous other practical means.
