  • Review for the Jersey Shore episode "The Letter."

Last week, we asked whether Sammi and Ronnie could remain relevant characters if they broke up. This week we found out the answer: ML (most likely).

In this episode, Snooki and Jenni plant an anonymous letter for Sammi revealing Ronnie's cheating. Sammi finds the letter and confronts Ronnie. Ronnie admits to some but not most of the incidents. And both Sammi and Ronnie try to uncover who wrote it.

First off, Ronnie calmly mans up and tries to patch things up with Sammi. We see Ronnie, as flawed as he is, trying to deal with things head on. Ronnie admits in a confessional clip that he was wrong, but he believes his accusers should have faced him rather than resorting to "kindergarten" tactics.

Sammi handles the events well, and for the first time she goes on offense instead of being a victim. Sammi tells Ronnie they're through. Sammi even says in the confessional that Ronnie's admitting to some of the things in the letter means that the rest is probably true too. She also confronts Snookie and Jenni about the letter…and although they deny it, Sammi already knows they wrote it. In all these confrontations, we see a stronger, more confident Sammi rather than the helpless Sammi who hid so many times under her flowered comforter.

(In an interesting post-episode interview, the former couple questions whether Sammi clung to Ronnie for comfort in their new Miami location.)

Not much else happened this week, other than the opening scene where the guys bring back more women than they can handle and we watch them orchestrate an isolation strategy right out of Call of Duty IV.

Did it seem like all that could have been shown in 30 minutes instead of stretching it out for the whole hour?

As far as the story arc, this episode introduces cracks in the housemates' friendships. Snooki and Jenni leave us wondering if they really support Sammi. And in a sign that Ronnie doesn't trust Mike, Ronnie mutters that he'll punch Mike if he took part in the letter. Is there something more behind this distrust - does Ronnie think Mike is waiting in the wings for Sammi?

By the episode's end, we're set up for the middle third of the season: Sammi and Ronnie are single cast members. Both can stand on their own two feet. And there's a storm brewing between Sammi and the girls in the house who lied to her about authoring the letter, as well as choppy waters between Ronnie and Mike.
