Jewel in the Palace is a historical fiction drama directed by Lee Byung Hoon for MBC that centers on the unusual life of Jang Geum, the first and only female Royal Physician in Korean history during the reign of King Jungjong during 16th century Korea. Having been raised away in a remote village with her parents, a former palace guard and cook, Jang Geum's (Lee Young Ae) life is turned upside down when her parents' true identities become known ' her father is executed, her mother is assassinated, and she is sent to the palace as a lowly orphaned worker. When she is pulled into the traitorous drama of the devious Choi clan, Jang Geum is exiled to the Jeju Island, where she meets Jang Deok (Kim Yeo Jin), a blunt and forward female doctor. After begging her to be taught medicine, Jang Geum perseveres to become a doctor's apprentice in the palace. It takes years but Jang Geum manages to become an illustrious physician, mixing both traditional and developing medicines, including surgery and anesthesia, while also wielding enough political favor to finally rid the Empire of the Choi clan.moreless
