Episode Summary

Despite everyone's protests, Joan allows her snobby, Ivy League-educated guidance counselor to advise her against applying to college. However, after Joan relays her plans to Roger, an engaging college student on the campus she's visiting, he tells her that college is attainable and persuades her to hire him as a tutor. Meanwhile, Adam becomes jealous of Joan's rapport with Roger; Will sees a dark side of Lucy; Helen questions her commitment to Catholicism, and Beth finds it difficult to resume a relationship with the wheelchair-bound Kevin.moreless

      • Joan: As the probability of duplicating a tie decreases with each tie thrown, human behavior becomes the deciding factor. This is the domain of the philosophers and the poets and not the mathematicians. Friedman: That was so hot! Edit
      • Grace: All guys are psycho. There has to be another way to procreate. Edit
      • Helen: Joan, if you want to go to design school after college, I'm completely in favor. We won't pay, but I'm in favor. Edit

      • Band Music: Theme from 'Rocky' As Joan prepares to go head-to-head with the geeks in Rock-Paper-Scissors, the band "coincidentally" starts playing the theme music to the movie Rocky in the background - the traditional theme of two warriors going head-to-head. Edit
      • Joan: You're very Matrix-y today. Referencing Orpheus's cryptic speeches in the movie The Matrix. Edit
