Joan of Arcadia

Season 1 Episode 15

Night Without Stars

Aired Friday 8:00 PM Feb 13, 2004 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • Right before the Concession Stand Worker God hands Joan her soda the straw in it is purple, yet when Joan has it the straw is yellow.

    • So DA Gabe Fellowes somehow escaped the purge of Arcadia's ranks? That seems odd since he basically tried to bribe Will to stay out of it - didn't Will mention that to anyone? Regardless, it seems hard to believe Fellowes managed to keep his job.

    • The correct term is "domestic violence survivor", but Iris says "domestic violence victim." Referring to children suffering from violence as "victims" went out a long time ago.

    • A program with abused children a) wouldn't allow an untrained volunteer teenager to work solo as Joan does, and b) probably wouldn't put an abused teen like Iris in charge of the place either.

    • One person in charge of so many children is illegal - they don't allow that ratio of supervisors-to-children in daycares, much less in a program taking care of battered children.

  • Quotes

    • Luke: Okay, I'm late.
Will: So, how about your big brother last night, huh?
      Luke: Awesome.
Kevin: How do you know, geek? You left after 2 minutes.
Luke: Yes, to participate in that rarest of high-school rituals, the pursuit of knowledge. (to Joan) You might want to try it sometime.
Joan: Hey, what's with attacking the bystander?

    • Friedman: Luke Girardi choking in chem class. It was like seeing Einstein forget the speed of light.

    • Helen: So...Luke.
      Will: Yup.
      : He overslept again.
Will: Maybe our genius is morphing into a teenager.
      : Not another one.
Will: I wanted to stop at two.

    • Joan: (to Little Girl God) You're in charge until I get back.

    • Luke: I have an extremely satisfying relationship with someone, both intellectually, as well as physically.
Kevin: Is this with somebody you don't have to inflate?

    • Joan: Work with children? What, like in a sweatshop?

    • Joan: What, Luke, the physics of basketball doesn't interest you?
Luke: The only interesting thing about the physics of basketball is how time and space combine to create a phenomenon known as Luke's departure.

    • Ms. Lischak: And as the liquid heats, the molecules vibrate, furiously pounding into each other until suddenly they can't stand it anymore and what? What? What do they do?

    • Joan: You didn't answer my question.
Concession Stand God: I don't answer questions, sweetpea. And this you know.
Joan: But I gave you a dollar!

    • Grace: (about Iris) Kill it, Girardi!

    • (Luke and Kevin have just had a fight, and Joan arrives)
Joan: (happily) Let's stop and get Slurpies!

    • Grace: Shut up, Friedman.

    • Grace: What's up with Rove and Cousin Itt?

    • Grace: How will understanding boiling points improve our lives? Will it help us boil things faster? Will it make us appreciate the virtues of boiled food? Or is it just a useless academic exercise in the pursuit of a useless high school degree?

    • Joan: Please don't make me cancel on Adam. I can't stand him hating me again. It'd be like being in some Russian goulash.
      Little Girl God: Gulag.

    • Joan: Okay, we're all going to get in line so you can all smash your artwork.

    • Hippie Dog Walker God: I work in mysterious ways, Joan. It's my thing.

    • Joan: (seeing her parents kiss) Eh! Come on! Come on, I'm eating here, ok? I thought we established the kitchen as a no PDA zone!

    • Joan: Iris, this is Grace. Grace has been Adam's best friend since preschool. You've probably seen him in his tightie whities, haven't you?

    • Luke: (to Kevin, angrily) Do you have any idea how much I hated you for shoving me and hitting me and making fun of me all the time? And no one would say anything about it because you were the big star and I was just a geek. You know after your accident, when I heard you would never walk again, I was happy.

    • Little Girl God: Everyone has a part of themselves they don't like, Joan. You carry it around like a weight. The lucky ones realize that when it becomes too heavy, you can choose to set it down. That's when you can see things the way they really are.

    • Little Girl God: Come on, I'll walk you home.
(Joan and LGG walk away hand in hand.)
Joan: Great, I'm being escorted home by a six-year-old.

    • Kevin: You're in good shape.
Rebecca: You can't make fun of my Pilates classes anymore.

    • (Kevin pulls Joan down to sit on his legs in his wheelchair.)
      Joan: (laughing) That's old.
      Kevin: You love it.
(Kevin wheels her out of the room.)

    • Joan: Do you even listen to music?
      Grace: Nothing legal.

  • Notes

    • This episode marks the first appearance of Iris (Misti Traya) on the series.

    • The title of this episode could also refer to the plot line of Adam buying tickets for him and Joan to see a White Stripes concert. After Joan finds out she can't go, Adam invites Iris, spawning a whole new issue. Therefore, the night of the concert was "A Night Without (Rock) Stars" for Joan.

    • In an interview, Amber Tamblyn said that the "I Love Everybody" pin Russ Tamblyn wore in this episode as a dog walker was his personal pin he'd had for a long time.

    • The episode title may refer to the saying "A day without you is like a night without stars", meaning a vast emptiness. The emptiness may refer to Adam dating Iris and Joan feeling bad about it.

    • Russ Tamblyn (Dog Walker God) is the father of Amber Tamblyn. He's been appearing in movies since the late 1940s, including the classic West Side Story.

    • Christopher Marquette was billed as a "Special Guest Star."

    • Music featured in this episode included:
"Follow Me Down" by Go To Blazes
"Kiss To Kill" by Fifi LaRue
"Seraphim & Seagulls" by Dana Mase
      "Ephemeral" by Nina Centaine
      "Lonesome Road" by Tricky Woo
"Rappaz Steppin 2 Me" by Click Tha Supah Latin
      "Whole World" by Holland
"Birds of A Feather" by The Rosenbergs
      "Lucky Stars" by Evan Olson
"Back of my Mind" by Bill Bonk
      "The Wish" by Josh Canova
      "Older Chests" by Damien Rice
"Lullaby" by Monica Schroeder (DVD Version)

    • New God: Dog Walker God. While Concession Stand Worker God, who appears in this episode, is the same God as Lunch Lady God from the "Pilot" episode.

    • Russ Tamblyn is a good friend of Quantum Leap star, Dean Stockwell (as Al Calavicci). Dean is Amber Tamblyn's Godfather.

  • Allusions

    • Grace: What is up with Rove and Cousin Itt?

References the recurring character played by Felix Silla on the Addams Family TV series and movies - a character who made a high squeaky sound, thus making fun of Iris' voice.

    • Barry 'The Bear' Caldwell: So, you want the gimp eye for the straight guy?

Referring to the popular Bravo TV series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.
