  • funny, a great episode

Having trouble meeting people in L.A., Joey throws a party to get to know some of his neighbors, and also to see about playing some basketball with Jake and his friends. The one he'd like to get to know, Jake, is more interested in Gina. Alex pretends to be Michael's girlfriend so that he can one-up his friend.
  • This episode continues to develop the characters. Joey wants new friends, Michael shows just how much desperate he is when Alex plays his girl in order to beat Michael's geeky-friend Seth, and the character of Howard isintroduced. A good installment.moreless

After two great introduction episodes, this episode continues the work.

We get to see Joey try to make friends with Jake, his neighbour, and he even throws a party for him in order to meet him better. Then later, when Gina gets with Jake, they beat over who's going to impress him.

Michael wants to impress his friend Seth by asking Alex to be his girlfriend-for-the-night, and ends up even more geekier than I thought he would be.

We're introduced to a recurring character Howard, Joey's boring neighbour.

It ends up being a really good episode.

The only bad thing about this episode is the absence of Bobbie, although she does not fill in any storyline. She's just really funny and it would be great having her over in all episodes.moreless
  • Parties, new friends, and character developments!

This episode introduces Howard, a recurring character who provides laughter through his worship of Joey or disgusting behaviors. He obviously has no meaning other than to be an extra character to make situations hilarious by his stupid antics and simply provide us with a cheap laugh. Though repetitive, it works on me.

As for Micheal, his competing against Seth, in a way, developes his character by showing him as someone who can be sneaky.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Joey says that because of Gina dating his friends he ended up having to do theater. However, it was revealed through various episodes of Friends that Joey always wanted to be an actor. This is stated again in the season 2 episode of Joey, Joey and the Dad, when Joey's father is upset that Joey didn't become a plumber like him.

    • It is revealed that Alex is 28 years old.

    • Simon Helberg (Seth) will later go on to star in The Big Bang Theory as another science nerd.

    • When Gina is talking to Michael about his friends, she mentions an 'Asian kid who's allergic to light'. This is a real, and extrememly rare, condition known as xeroderma pigmentosum.

    • On Joey's Magna Doodle: A goat eating out of a garbage can in front of the Hollywood sign.

    • Goof: Just after the opening credits, when Joey runs out to see Jake, Jake has one hand out in one shot and then puts the basketball in both hands. When the shot changes, his hand is out again and then he puts the basketball in both hands again.

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Joeyism: (Anytime Joey misunderstands a word, phrase, event etc...)

Joey: Uh, so, what do you do for a living Jake?
Jake: I'm a market maker in the energy sector, mostly do arbitrage.
Joey: Ah! Hey, my uncle's a garbage man, yeah.

    • Joeyism: (Anytime Joey misunderstands the meaning of a word, phrase, event etc...)

(Joey wants to look up Jake Morgan's phone number, knowing that he lives in the same apartment complex.)
Joey: Shoot, there's like 10 J. Morgans... If only I knew his address... (Gina rolls her eyes and shakes her head.) Ha! Here's a guy with the same address as me... (Gina smiles and nods at Joey.) Right! Got it, I'm on it.

    • Joey (about Jake): I don't want you talking to him! I told you how hard it is for me to meet people.
Gina: It's not easy for me either. Why can't we share him?
Joey: Because that never works. Every time you get involved with one of my friends, you ruin it. Either you break up with him and he doesn't wanna be with me anymore, or he breaks up with you and you scare him away. That's why I had to quit the football team, the baseball team... I ended up having to do theater! (realizing) Oh, so thanks.

    • Michael: Do you know what it's like to have someone whose like you but just a little bit better?
      Joey: Yeah! Johnny Depp!

    • Alex: So listen, I know you're having a party tonight, so I just wanted to drop off a list of rules about noise and parking and stuff...
Joey: You know you're invited, right?
Alex (ripping the list): Oh, ok!

    • Joey: You can work here. You got a comfy couch, a lamp, pens. What else do you need?
      Michael: A Cray T-3E 200 Super-Computer.

    • Jake: We still on for basketball?
Joey: No! I think I'll play basketball with some guys who DON'T think my sister is trashy.
Jake: Well, good luck finding them.
      Joey: Tell me about it!

    • Alex: Well, sometimes what you DON'T see is sexier.
      Joey: Only women think that.

    • Michael: That means I'm the LAST guy from my group of friends to have a serious relationship. The LAST!
Joey: Even after the allergic to light guy?
Michael: Arthur Trang does all right. You tell a girl you have to sit there in the dark or I'll die, and stuff happens.
Joey: That's going in the arsenal!

  • NOTES (4)

    • Alex mentions reading an article in Cosmo.

Cosmopolitan magazine (also known as Cosmo) is the best selling magazine for young women in the world. It was founded in 1886 and is published around the world. It features articles on relationships and sex, fashion, celebrities, careers etc...

    • When Joey is talking to Jake during the minute Gina gives him, he mentions that he likes Die Hard and saw Mr. T in a restaurant.

Die Hard has been stated as Joey's favorite movie in many episodes of Friends. Die Hard is a hit series of action movies starring Bruce Willis as John McClane. They are about a normal cop and the various large scale problems he finds himself in the middle of.

Mr. T is a famous actor best known for his role on the 80's action show The A-Team. He is also well known for his catch phrase 'I pity the fool who messes with me!' and for wearing lots of jewelry.

    • Howard says that Days of Our Lives hasn't been the same since Joey left.

Days of Our Lives is one of the longest running and most successful soap operas on television. It has been on nearly every day since 1965 and there has been over 11,000 episodes.

Dr. Drake Ramoray is the character that Joey played on Days of Our Lives throughout various seasons of Friends. Between the end of Friends and the start of Joey, Dr. Ramoray's character was killed off again and Joey decided to make the move to Hollywood to seriously work on his career. • Michael asks Molly which one is better, Jedi or Empire.

He is referring to The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the 2nd and 3rd movies (5th and 6th chronologically) in the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. Which movie is better has long been a topic of argument between fans.

He has made great discoveries in the fields of cosmology, quantum gravity, temporal mechanics and general relativity. His book, A Brief History of Time, was on the best seller list for a record breaking 237 weeks. It is unlikely that he would call Seth. While his modulator helps him to speak, all of his speeches must be pre-written because of the length of time it takes to form words. In previous interviews that were unscripted, it has taken up to 7 minutes for him to answer a single question.
