Joey accidentally makes a date with a reporter from "People" for Valentine's Day. He has the gang "accidentally" bump into him and his date at the restaurant to ruin the mood, but his plans backfire when she thinks he's taking their relationship to the next level. A drunken Alex shares some sexual secrets with Gina. After Joey sends Michael over to hit on a table of girls, Michael actually becomes "one of the girls."moreless

    It's not so much that this episode was "bad", but it was more predictable than the show usually is. And it's not that predictability in a sitcom is necessarily a bad thing. Joey is about as safe as it gets when it comes to half-hour comedies, but there's safe and then there's "the monkeys at the typewriters actually work!"

    We know that everytime Joey tries to get out of his relationship with Judy, it's going to backfire and only get him in deeper. And the puppy-love actions of Judy are border-line painful to watch, as it should be because obviously we're supposed to side with Joey and not think that maybe these two should be together.

    That being said, I do think that the supporting storylines pick up a good amount of slack, although they both fail to reach a satisfying comical conclusion. With Gina and Alex, I thought hearing Alex's confession was pretty hilarious but I wasn't too impressed with Gina's tap-dancing.

    As for Michael and his gal-pals, that petered out even faster with no moves to further see Michael's complete ineptitude with women.

    Following the excellent "Joey and the Tonight Show", the shortcomings of this episode come through crystal clear.moreless

    • Joey says that he likes to call his Valentine's Day ritual the Valentine's Day Massacre. The Valentine's Day Massacre is the name given to to the events surrounding the death of seven people in Chicago in 1929. The conflict took place between two rival mob gains. The seven people were lined up against a wall and executed, hence being given the name massacre.

    • During Gina's tap dance, you can see the tattoo on Drea de Matteo's ankle.

    • Joey makes a toast to the Knicks. It was well established in Friends continuity that the Knicks are Joey's favorite team.

(picks up the latest edition of People magazine and looks at the cover) So move over Robert Blake's Legal Nightmare.

    • Bobbie: Oh, Joey. Laughter really is the best medicine, and that story just cleared up my hepatitis.

    • Alex: When my mother was my age, she had three kids. All I have is a husband who's away all the time. Last week, a squirrel snuck into our apartment and I thought it was Eric coming home to surprise me. I put on lingerie for a squirrel!

    • Bobbie says that she took a shower with Ed Asner. Ed Asner is an Emmy winning actor best known for his role as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin off, also titled Lou Grant.

    • Joey says that by the time he is done with his interviewer, she will want to put him on the cover of the magazine. He then says 'So move over Robert Blake's legal nightmare!' Robert Blake is an Emmy winning actor best known for his role in the television series Beretta. At the time of this episode, he had been undergoing legal woes for years; trying to combat allegations of killing his wife in 2001. He was acquitted later in 2005. The trial and details were widely followed and reported in the news and other media.

    • Joey says that his mom is going to be so excited about him being in People, and if he can just get into a Playboy then his dad can read about him too. Playboy Magazine is a widely circulated men's magazine that leans toward erotic imagery. While it is often considered an excuse, Playboy publishes journalistic articles on topics ranging from politics to social issues. They do interviews with public figures from all walks of life and often publish stories by famous authors that are written specifically for Playboy.

    • The photo shoot Joey is doing is for People Magazine. People Magazine is a weekly periodical that focuses on celebrity and human interest stories. It is best known for their specialty issues; Sexiest Man Alive, Best and Worst Dressed, and Most Beautiful People.

    • Gina calls Alex Keith Richards. Keith Richards is a member of the very popular band The Rolling Stones. There are legendary rumors about his drug use and capacity to drink alcohol.

    • Alex says when she makes love to her husband she thinks about Noah Wyle. Gina then questions Alex's choice; saying that she could see Clooney, or Eriq La Salle, or even 'that new Indian chick'. Noah Wyle is one of the original stars of the hit medical drama ER, as are George Clooney and La Salle. The 'Indian chick' Gina is referring to is Parminder Nagra, who was a more recent addition to the cast.
