This epic, 590 minute HBO mini-series is absolutely fabulous. I just finished watching it over the past 24 hours, as once I had started, I instantly was hooked and couldn't wait to see the next part (episode) of the series. Almost 10 hours later, I am convinced that I just saw one of the best min-series ever created.

The series tells the entire story of John Adams, from his beginnings as a lawyer in Massachusetts to his rallying the colonies to create an Army led by George Washington to fight the British to his appointment as Vice-President and then President. Along the way, we see the blood, sweat and tears both his family and himself endure throughout these years. The trials and tribulations that Adams went through are depicted extremely accurately and acted superbly by Paul Giammati and Laura Linney (as John's wife, Abigail) along with a fabulous overall cast - Tom Wilkinson as Benjamin Franklin is especially fabulous. I almost couldn't give a higher recommendation for any history buffs out there, or to any fans of wonderful television.moreless

  • A groundbreaking television production....

    "Perfect"
Comedian Dave Foley has called HBO "The Tom Hanks Network" - and thankfully he is right. From producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman comes what is, for my money, the best made-for-television production yet with the 2008 John Adams miniseries starring the Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney.

Hopefully great and big things are in store for director Tom Hooper because the atmosphere, quality, and power that he accomplishes with this John Adams miniseries is something unrivaled in television today. With the help of cinematographers Tak Fujimoto ("The Sixth Sense," "Signs") and Danny Cohen ("This Is England"), Hooper creates a stylish and emotional picture for "John Adams."

Paul Giamatti shows why he is one of the finest actors of his generation with his performance of John Adams. Some critics like to label Giamatti as a typecast actor, supposedly playing the same down-on-his-luck characters (I disagree, however) - and if "The Illusionist" was not enough to convince them otherwise "John Adams" surely will. If this is not Giamatti's finest performance, it easily at least rivals his career-making performance in "Sideways" and Oscar-nominated supporting role in "Cinderella Man." Giamatti literally transforms himself to fit perfectly into the role of John Adams - altering his speech and mannerisms to channel US President #2. Laura Linney also gives one of (if not the best) performance of her career as Abigail Adams, John's wife, capturing the hot-cold but always passionate and individual woman known to history. Giamatti and Linney won the Emmy, Golden Globe, and S.A.G. Awards for their performances and there is no arguing with that.

The supporting roles are just as impressive as Giamatti and Linney's starring turns: David Morse gives a towering portrayal of George Washington, Danny Huston is one heck of a fiery Samuel Adams, and Tom Wilkinson gives an Emmy & Golden Globe Award-winning portrayal of a flawed and complicated Benjamin Franklin. As good as all of the performers are, it is Stephen Dillane's excellent performance of Thomas Jefferson that stands out the most for me. Brilliantly subtle and historically sound, Dillane quietly gives the best performance in the series as one of the United States' most important, influential, and interesting leaders.

It seems as if television is often thought of as second-grade compared to theatrical releases. I usually agree with this, as films have more time and money to develop and form their story and picture, but the playing field between film and TV is leveled in the case of the 2008 John Adams miniseries. The Emmy (13 wins out of 23 nominations) and Golden Globe (4 wins out of 4 nominations) Award-winning series, "John Adams" steals the viewer into the 18th Century with brilliant performances, exquisite film-making, top-tier storytelling, and amazing visuals.moreless

There is no better television series about the American founding fathers. Every aspect of the show, probably even the crafts services, was amazing. The music, the writing, directing, acting, production value, is all what I would expect a series of this depth should be. There was no weak link in my opinion. When a show keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you want to go to the theater to watch it, you know that the producers have done their job. It's Emmy's were no surprise when compared to the other miniseries that were nominated. Best thing on Television in the fall of 2007.moreless
