Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Show Summary

The seven part mini-series is a historical fantasy set in 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars in an England where magic once existed and is about to return. Centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation’s past. Scholars discover that one remains - the reclusive Mr. Norrell. His displays of magic soon thrill England as he raises Lady Pole from the dead and summons an army of ghost ships. Cautious and fussy Mr. Norrell is soon challenged by the brilliant novice magician, Jonathan Strange. A dangerous battle ensues between the two great men. Their obsessions and secret dabblings with the dark arts will cause more trouble than they can imagine.

The mini-series is based on the debut novel by British writer Susanna Clarke first published in September 2004, and adapted by Peter Harness (Wallander, Is Anybody There?). The series is directed by Toby Haynes (The Musketeers, Doctor Who) and produced by Nick Hirschkorn (Five Children and It).

The series is a UK-Canada co-production. It is co-produced by Jonathan Strange Production Ltd and Production Jonathan Strange Inc. and Cuba Pictures Limited in association with Feel Films for BBC in association with Attraction Images, Far Moor Production Ltd and Screen Yorkshire.
