Episode Summary

EDIT
Five ships disappear in the Sargasso Sea. Finally, there's a survivor, who describes a "thin, red light". The authorities bring in noted scientist Dr. Benton Quest. Together with son Jonny, bodyguard Race Bannon, and (of course) Bandit the dog, Dr. Quest investigates. Someone is conducting laser experiments from a converted galleon, and plans to shoot down the new Man In The Moon rocket! It's up to Jonny, his father, and their friends to stop this scheme.moreless

  • I remember when this was a prime-time show on ABC!

Of course, I was in elementary school at the time. But, I was instantly hooked on the series from this episode onward. And, I've watched every telecast of every re-run, ever since. The plot-device is admittedly out-dated, what with Apollo 11 having landed on the moon five years afterward. And, anyone who gets Discovery Channel knows that--while it's true a lot of sailing ships got becalmed in the Sargasso Sea, back in the day--there is no graveyard of rotting hulks presently cluttering it up. Who knows? Maybe some of the marine biologists who've proven that were inspired to _become_ marine biologists by this episode!moreless
  • Lots of action and I love the chase scenes.

Even though there are obvious flaws with the science and the animation I still remember being riveted to my seat watching it. (I was young when I first saw it) You have to remember that this series was written in the 60's when a 25" was considerer huge. In the 60's and hydrofoil boat would be considered science fiction.. Very good episode.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Race's shirt in this episode is a polo style shirt, unlike the kind he usually wears in other episodes.

    • This episode establishes that Roger T. "Race" Bannon is a government agent for the Bureau of External Affairs charged with protecting the motherless Jonny from any kidnapping attempts that could compromise Dr. Quest's scientific work for the country. The Bureau's file number on the team is O-37. Race's registration is #XZW 98346-56-2033, Jonny's is #YOY 4649S-32-1175, Dr. Quest's is #XZW 9S346-21-5704.

    • In the beginning of the episode, the Lizard Men destroy two ships with their laser weapon. One is a large metal ship, and the other is a smaller wooden fishing vessel. Strangely enough, in spite of this obvious difference between the two targets, the debris falling from the sky after each ship explodes looks EXACTLY the same.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • (after Race gets clocked by a 'Lizard Man')
Jonny: Foolish question #1: does it hurt, Race?
Race: Only when I say 'ouch'.

    • (after Dr. Quest destroys the villain's boat with reflected laser light)
Race: I don't know how your dad did it, but I'm sure glad he's on our side!

  • NOTES (2)
