  • Who are the people of the crowd who always turn up when disaster looms, and why does Bill always see them?

This episode is based on a popular urban myth which gained ground after the Kennedy assassination - the myth of "men in black" always being seen (or were they?) at the edges of crowds at terrible events. Conspiracy theorists tended to view these sinister mystery-people as the faceless employees of secret organizations out to control us all; Michael J. Bird, the writer of this episode, has something else in mind and may well have seen Jean Cocteau's famous film "Orphee" before writing it. Personifications of death are familiar in the literature of the fantastic, but one might wonder why such anthropomorphism would be as complicated as it is here - it's essentially a red herring, finally. Of course, the notion that the none-too-likable hero is in love with death - with his own extinction, even - is never quite articulated, and might have been more interesting than the plot-complications we actually get.moreless
