  • The jPod must deal with the silly ideas of their new management.

    9.0
Things begin during a period of change for the jPod. The main characters all work at a computer-gaming company and were placed in a work team because each of their surnames begins with a "J", hence the "jPod". We are given a very appropriate introduction to each of the characters via an introduction video for the "new boss guy". Every character shows themselves to be quirky and charming. Ethan Jarlewski (David Kopp) is our protagonist, a very normal individual in a sea of dysfunction. But the great thing about Ethan is that, though he complains incessantly, it's possible that he is, in fact, revelling in the chaos. As it turns out, "new boss guy" wants to force his brilliant ideas onto the jPod's new video game design in an attempt to win the affection of the son of his failed marriage. As we learn briefly of the lives of the jPod members, Ethan's life becomes stranger and stranger. A dead drug dealer needs to be buried in the woods, an old classmate eats his mother's prize marijuana plant, and Chinese refugees take shelter in his apartment. The show is true to Douglas Coupland's sardonic style and combines elements of both "Arrested Development" and "The Office". "I Love Turtles" is the first instalment in what may be a very watchable show for CBC.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Opening sequence groin kick: Male mall cop kicks skateboarder.

    • Goof: During Kaitlin's testimonial on the internet for the Underground Diet she says "254 pounds of self-loathing". When talking to Ethan in his apartment near the end of the episode she says she lost 150 pounds making her 104 which is borderline anorexic.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Carol: Well finally, something wholesome! Honestly, Steven, we didn't raise him with restricted television privileges just so he could develop a disturbing interest in carnage.

    • Cowboy: Alright, Steven Lefkowitz. Dude, check this out, this guys a hugger!
      John Doe: What?
Cowboy: Look at this, he's on the board of a cuddling club.
John Doe: Man, that is sick!
Cowboy: I thought I recognized him...
John Doe: What do you mean you recognized him?
      Cowboy: I ju-just knew I'd seen before...

    • Steve: Gang, gang, gang, all this negative talk is killing my creative spark, so heres the deal. My son Connor loves turtles, therefore my first Neutronic Arts release will have a lovable shelled reptile on the cover.

    • Carol: Meet "The Dude." I named it after Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. Shaggy. Gruff. Loveable. And not for sale. It's the crowning glory of my genetic theories.

    • Ethan: Hi, I'm Ethan Jarlewski. I work here in the jPod as the Gore Specialist. Basically I find new ways of inserting carnage and violence in video games while conforming to quality codes.
Cowboy: Dude that's so boring. Talk about your love life.
Ethan: I'm not talking about my love life. My favorite room temperature is... This is pretty good. Cowboy where are we at now?
      Cowboy: 21.7 degrees Celsius.
Ethan: Make that 71 degrees Fahrenheit. I hate metric. I don't want to talk about it.
Cowboy: Talk about your love life.
Ethan: Okay, my love life. I've had my heart broken twice and lately I've been wondering if there is even such a thing as "The One" and that scares me. And that's enough of that.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    • Electronic Arts:

Neotronic Arts, the gaming company for which the podsters work, is a spoof of Electronic Arts (EA) in real life. EA are famous for making games, many of which sport related, from consoles such as the Sega Mega Drive to the new generation consoles.

    • Madden:

Kaitlin asks to be transfered to the "football franchise" of Neutronic Arts. This is a reference to Electronic Arts NFL franchise Madden.

    • Subway:

The whole concept of Kaitlin having been an "Underground Loser" is an allusion to the Subway sandwich campaign that was called the Subway Diet. They had success stories and endorsements similar to the one Kaitlin gave on their website.

    • Carol: Meet "The Dude." I named it after Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. Shaggy. Gruff. Loveable. And not for sale. It's the crowning glory of my genetic theories.

Carol names her prize Cannabis plant "The Dude" after Jeff Bridges character in the 1998 Coen brothers film The Big Lebowski.
