I'm hoping someone out there can help me with a comment Amy made to her daughter on episode 75, Roses and Truth. from 11/5/2002. (This is the episode where Gillian finds out she's finally pregnant)Amyis trying to get her daughter ready for school despite incessant questions and pleas for this and that. When she says one of her friends just got a cell phone for her birthday, Amy replies that the girl's parents are 'Muldoons'. I have a vague idea what the reference means but I'dlove to know more about it's origin. Is it from a story or a play, or is it just part of the New England vernacular. Having grown up in a little town in Oregon some of those references go right over my head. Does anyone out there have any information?

Hey! I'm from Oregon too! So it shouldn't surprise you that I have no idea either, although I gathered a conclusion from the context. I searched for you, but with no results. At best guess, it's slang for some kind of idiot or heathen. I did find some references to Irish and Scottish families and also to Boontling which is slang from Booneville, California. It's a different spelling that what you proposed and the meaning in Boontling doesn't make much sense in context, but here's the link:

For anyone who read my post but had nothing to add: I asked my husband to pass this question around at work and he struck the leprechaun's gold... A co-worker's wife is Irish and her mother is from the old country so she had the answer. A Muldoon is someone who lives beyond their means. I still don't know the origin of the reference. I may be from a play, or just an adage. I'd still like to hear more, so if you're reading this and you know, please post your information.

    Thanks!
