Amy finds it rather difficult to follow her mom's advice and embrace her 40th birthday as a milestone. Donna is in Amy's court representing a 13-year-old girl who accidentally kills her friend while they are out on a joyride but shows no remorse for her death. Maxine tries to determine whether two brothers are better off without the presence of their father, an ex-con, in their lives. Amy miscarries on her 40th birthday. Amy drowns her sorrows at a bar located on the beach, where she meets a stranger who gives her the perspective she needs during her difficult time.moreless

This episode is one of my favourites from Judging Amy. I think the acting in this episode was very professional. Shelly who is played by Alexa Nikolas shows no remorse for her best friend and the rest of her family. However she proved just how much she does care about her best friend and how guilty she actually feels during the courtroom scene. I think that this story line is very strong and brilliantly acted. This episode is only short but kept me seated throughout it. It was also a shame that Amy lost her baby, especcially on her 40th birthday.moreless

Wow this was a really sad episode of Judging Amy. I thought that the storyline of the 13 year old girl killing her best friend in a car accident was really heart breaking. The guilt alone that girl must be feeling is far worst than any punishment the court will give her. I was really surprised that Lauren felt like Amy losing the baby was her fault for not be happy about it. I can not believe that she lost the baby that was also sad. If i was Amy i would have been meaner to the guy on the beach. I thought that it was really good of Maxine to look for the two boys father to see if he wanted to be apart of their lives or if he would sign the paper saying he gives up all rights to the boys. I think that it was really good that the father wanted to be apart of his sons lives to make sure they do not fallow in his footsteps.moreless

    • This episode was called "Happy Borthday" because in the episode when Lauren was putting the icing on Amy's cake, she made a mistake and it came out "Happy Borthday" instead of "Happy Birthday".

    • Goof: Amy takes a detour and goes from Hartford to the beach. The problem is that once she gets there you can see a towering cliff right next to the ocean. Unfortunately, there are no such cliffs to be found Connecticut but there are plenty of high cliffs along the coast of California.

    • Karen Kramer, who plays "Woman", is a stand-in for the show.

    • When Amy goes to the beach, then is hounded by somebody, and then heads to a restaurant overlooking the sea, it resembles a scene in an episode of "Cagney & Lacey" episode called "Burn Out" in which Tyne Daly's character Mary Beth went awol.
