This episode was revealing in many ways. First for the character of Donna. Donna seems, frankly, a lovable idiot. However, her mother reaveals that Donna graduated in the top of her class, has an IQ of 173, but gave up her graduate school scholarship to join the marines. Donna has apparently failed her mother (a country club socialite) despite searching for her mother's affection.
I love the character of Maxine. She's strong-willed, bitchy, sarcastic, rude, opinionated and refuses to admit when she's wrong. Yet, she also harbors a love for everything and everyone she comes in contact with that is amazingly powerful (Props to Tyne Daly for an amazing portrayal). She admonishes Donna's mother when she wishes to "give-up" on her daughter, explaining that it's not an option. And when Donna's mother walks away, Maxine steps in and acts as Donna's mother. Not because she feels pity for Donna or because she's angry at Donna's mother and wishes to prove a point. Maxine does it because she has a love for life, and honestly cares for those who need it most.
