This episode is an example of the quintessential Maxine Gray. Despite being foiled in her attempts to remove a troubled little girl from her orgy-staging, drug-using parents by a sleazy lawyer who gets what he wants by threatening to pull the skeletons out of the judge's closet and suing DCF, as well as Sean and Maxine personally, she comes up with a unique solution (with a little clandestine help from Bruce). We also see her give up politeness and reveal her true feelings to Gillian about her plans for the wedding. At the same time, the normally placid Sean becomes uncharacteristically angry and violent, almost coming to blows with the aforementioned lawyer.

Meanwhile, Amy must convince a father to continue to pay child support on his son, although it is revealed that he is not the biological father and is already reluctant to pay, since he believes that his money would only finance his ex-wife's new boyfriend. In the end, it takes bringing in the boy himself to solve the conflict.

Amy's ultimate reliance on Bruce to make her job bearable is demonstrated in this episode, and this is accentuated later by the contrast Maxine provides when she comes to Amy for help and ends up asking Bruce for a favor. We also get an eyeful of the rarely-seen angry side of Sean, suggesting that it really strikes a chord with him on a deep level. Kyle, on the other hand, learns that his often cold, calculating boss has a soft spot from her policy concerning a retarded man. Gillian, however, remains the two-dimensional character she usually is when Maxine's wedding comes up again.
