After serving five years in Medecino State Prison for insurance fraud, a crime she didn't commit, Alex DeMonaco moves to a halfway house and via sheer persistence, wins an unpaid position at the law firm of Burdick, Whitney & Morgan. Working for Hamilton Whitney III's, she uses her position to help others and to search for her missing daughter, Mia, who her husband disappeared with when he framed Alex for fraud. In the two-part opener, Alex looks into a pharmaceutical company whose experimental drug program left a 12-year old boy in a coma.

Alex: (to Kaplan) But you're not a lawyer are you, you're a politician, which means all that what matters is how many butts you can kiss... so that must mean you have the biggest lips in San Francisco!
Rebecca Goldstein Whitney is Whit's ex-wife # 3. Whitney writes a great supporting letter to Governor Romero about Alex and also shares Alex's opinion of Kaplan.
