Donnie: Donnie want kiss like on Showtime!
Nina: You mean there's 100 birds in my office?! Finch: Well, ninety-nine. One of them drank your "orange juice" and flew into a fan.
(Nina has just come off the elevator, bringing a bird in a cage with her) Jack: What's that filthy thing doing here? Finch: Oh, c'mon, she works here!
Donnie: Hahaha, you're small. Finch: Just let it go, he's a very special boy.
When "Slow Donnie" first aired, there was an additional moment at his birthday party where he said, "Donnie likes Maya, she got big ones!" This brief moment does not appear in the reruns.
This episode's parody of The Birds is JSM's second Hitchcock parody of the season, following the Psycho parody in "The Mask". According to writer Andy Gordon, Nina's parakeet subplot was inspired by a real-life incident. A prominent actress on a popular television show had given birds to everyone in the cast and crew of her show. However, all the birds soon died. Gordon would not reveal the identity of the actress or the show.
Like "Rescue Me", this episode was written and directed by creator Steve Levitan. Levitan had been pitching this idea to his staff for quite some time. They rejected the idea as being too potentially offensive. Only when someone came up with the idea of having David Cross play the character was it approved. They were familiar with Cross, and realized he was possibly the only person who could portray this character in both a humorous and non-offensive way. In fact, it was agreed that the episode would be done if and only if they could get Cross for the role. They had to wait several months for Cross to come free of some commitments, but when he finally did and agreed to play the part, the show was promptly filmed.
