Exactly how did Barry Allen die?

Also, there was mention of a "speed force" in the final episode of the cadmus arc. What exactly is that?

    Another complicated question.
Again it has to do with the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Bear with me since it's been a while since I've read through the story so I might be a little off on some of the details.

Now as far as most of the DC universe in concerned, Barry Allen just mysteriously disappeared one day.

In reality, he was kidnapped by the Anti-Monitor.
As a speedster, perhaps the fastest, Barry had the ability to travel between the separate universes at will. That made Barry a threat to the plans to destroy the rest of the Multiverse.

Barry was kept prisoner in the Antimatter Universe and rendered helpless by the Psycho Pirate. Eventually Barry broke free and used Psycho Pirate on the Anti-Monitor's minions to create the distraction he needed to get to the heart of the Antimatter cannon. Nearly complete, the antimatter cannon was poised to destroy the remaining 5 Earths.

The concentrated anitmatter at the heart of the weapon had an effect on Barry's powers. It actually hurt to run, but by running around the weapon Barry could force the antimatter energy back on itself and destroy the weapon. As he did so he saw images from the multiverse, his dimensional frequency briefly coming in tune. Batman actually caught a glimpse of Barry this way. As Barry ran, his life was drained away, his body disintegrating around him, but he kept pushing himself.

His efforts were rewarded as the cannon was destroyed, but perhaps the most tragic part of the story was that aside from the Anti-Monitor no one knew that Barry had given his life to save the multiverse.

But Barry's story doesn't quite end there.
There are hints that at the moment of his death he became the very bolt of lightning that turned him into the Flash in the first place. There are also hints that Barry's soul resides in the Speed Force.

As far as I know the Speed Force is the power that all living speedsters draw upon and where all speedsters end up. Sorta like a speedster heaven. Since it's a timeless force, it likely contains the power of all the speedsters who have lived and who will ever live.

    Hope that answers the questions.

Ok, that was pretty wierd. That is sad about nobody knowing he gave his life to save the universe.

Wait...the reason Barry disappeared wasn't because he was kidnapped, but it was because he was in the future with Iris. Then he got kidnapped. That was why Batman was so freaked out when Barry showed up while he was fighting the Joker. T

Yeah, he did, but I wanted to know if there was any comic basis for this phenomenon.

Most of them derive their powers from the Speed Force, well at least in DC Comics anyway.

Well The Golden Age Jay Garrick was exposed to heavy water vapors. Barry Allen and Wally west were hit with electrified chemicals. Bart Allen was born with it due to being Barry Allens Grandson. Johnny Quick gets his by reciting a mathematical formula. Others are genetically engineered or altered by means of Steroids and hormones.

Actually, the heroes did discover that Barry died. In a later issue (Barry died in # the assembled heroes invaded the Anti-Monitor's base and Kid Flash (Wally West) discovered Barry's tattered uniform (costume? the suits get called both) and everyone was able to figure out that Barry was gone (if not specifically how).

However, Barry has appeared in one fairly recent Flash story. In Rogue War (Geoff Johns' last storyline on the book), he showed up through time travel using the Cosmic Treadmill.

He jumped out of the Speed Force to grab Emo-Boy Prime in IC, as well.
