Superman finds himself powerless on a desert planet with a red sun with the other debris that the Toyman zapped. He rigs up a car and heads for the League's beacon. He soon forges himself a sword and makes his way past wolves and storms to a jungle . . . and a crashed Watchtower. There he is confronted by Vandal Savage, who reveals they're on Earth and he destroyed the Earth a few months after Superman's "death." Savage then explains how he destroyed the League and used a gravitational device for conquest . . . which ended up killing everyone else on Earth. Savage is now the only survivor, driven partially insane by his guilt.
Superman realizes Savage has a time machine but he can't use it himself – with Superman present they have a plan but the energy source, an artificial sun, was stolen by mutated insects and the two must venture into the creatures' lair to recover it. When they get to the source it restores Superman's powers. Superman travels back to just after the League have defeated the villains rampaging over Metropolis and after a joyful reunion goes off to prevent Savage from stealing his gravitational weapon from scientist Ray Palmer. And in the future Savage has a brief few seconds of redemption as he sees a new future snap into place and himself and his world erased.
