  • SLOW GAME

Justified: Pimps, Hos, and Thar She Blows

A violent episode takes care of loose ends as the title implies, but standout conversations provide the real action.

  • Episode Summary

Raylan tracks a southern mafia soldier, who maybe the answer in taking out Quarles, meanwhile Ava shows her tough side.

    • Whatever Happened to Tanner?

      8.0
This week focused on Tanner (the Dixie Mafia soldier who recruited Devil to turn on Boyd and also shot up Boyd's oxy clinic with Errol who is Limehouse's man) who has been hiding out and being Limehouse's informant and going to Qarles telling him that he shot up Boyd's clinic to impress him. He also helped Sheriff Napier get Boyd into trouble by blowing up his own car to frame Boyd with it and discredit Shelby who is running against him for Sheriff elect. Raylan is visited by Ava at the bar he lives above and is asked for help in visiting Boyd. He complies and Boyd compels him to get him out of the jail by finding Tanner and proving his innocence by getting Tanner to tell him the truth. Another motivation for Raylan is that Tanner is a soldier for Qarles, and Raylan suspects he was the one that got away when he shot up the mobile oxy clinic a few episodes back. Qarles goes to Limehouse to help him rig the election in Napier's favor and he hires the campaign manager named Harvey who oversees the public debates between the two opponents. Also returning this week is Delroy and his oxy-addicted girls who try to rob a bank only one of them gets shot. When they dispose of the body Delroy shoots another one but the third is the circumstantial queen of survival, Ella May, who also survived the massacre at the oxy clinic. She flees to Ava and asks for help. While she sleeps Ava and Johnny have a talk and it's revealed that he can sort of walk after all. He tells her that it's dangerous to show sympathy since Delroy pays Boyd protection money. She calls Delroy and offers Ella May back to him for a finder's fee of two thousand dollars which he complies with. When Delroy shows up Ava blows him to kingdom come and Ava and Ella May clean up the body. Back to that Raylan guy we all love so much, is on the lookout for Tanner and watches Sheriff Napier who will meet with him he suspects since Tanner's mother proved to not be a solid enough lead. Also Boyd talks up Shelby at the Sheriff debate at town hall and wins the crowd away from Napier towards the more salt of the earth Shelby. Tanner and Errol rob the bomb-maker who made the bomb for Napier's car at gunpoint and when they look for the money on top of a shelf Tanner steps onto a landmine. Rather humorously Sheriff Napier waits for Tanner to show up at a meet where he said that he would give him his money and Napier plans to kill him and Raylan gets the call while watching Napier and drives past him saying that Tanner will be a no-show. Raylan, having been warned off Qarles by Art at the beginning of the episode, has a singular focus on Qarles while he questions Tanner on the landmine while an ATF agent tries to defuse it. Errol had already shot the bomb-maker and taken the money from the garage to give to Tanner's mom. When the mine arms after Tanner drops his gun Raylan and the ATF agent flee the scene and then Tanner gets obliterated the mine. Raylan's big question of "how can I get to Robert Qarles?" is the prevalent focus of his this week and he also saw Errol deliver the money to Tanner's mom after he helped set up the new TV Tanner had bought her. Decent episode, and Boyd and Ava's talk at the end of the episode celebrating a step in the right direction for Shelby's campaign about her taking on girls like Ella May in the future and giving her a more active role was a good thing to give her character to do. Now that Boyd's out of jail, things can start to go a little faster in his storyline.moreless

Justified has been strong this season, but I particularly liked this episode because it gave us more of the supporting characters, something that has become a lot better as this show has progressed. We are seeing the bad guys show their true colors and we continue to set up for a big final batch of episodes.

Liked the land mine scene too. For the most part this was a well-done show tonight.moreless
