  • I'll be damned if last night's episode of Justified, "Save My Love," wasn't an homage to to the teeth-grinding suspense of Hitchcock's Notorious.

    Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense, was unbelievably skilled at creating tension on the screen through sideways glances, precise information leaks, and heart-stopping near misses. And I'll be damned if last night's episode of Justified, "Save My Love," wasn't an homage to to the teeth-grinding suspense of Hitchcock's Notorious.

    For all intents and purposes, "Save My Love" was the second part of a filler episode, and, to quote Community's Abed, a "bottle episode" with the bulk of the action taking place inside Raylan's workplace. I'd thought Winona's money problems were fixed with last week's episode (at least, until I saw the previews for last night's episode), and I was understandably skeptical of detouring further away from the season's main arc. But the episode made the scenic route worth it, thanks to crafty writing and spot-on pacing.

    Winona and Raylan's predicament of trying to replace a bag of bank-robbery money that had gone unclaimed for two decades sucked me in, because only three people knew what was going on: Raylan, Winona, and the audience. Their problem became our problem, and every external force that rerouted their path toward getting away with it stuck a dagger in our guts. It was an hour of wonderfully frustrating circumstances, and the speedy pacing only amplified the tension.

    And all the while there was Winona's tan leather bag, brimming with stacks of smirking Benjamin Franklins, mocking us at every turn. Just sitting there. Like a bag. But it was anything but a bag. It's always fantastic when an inanimate object becomes a central character in a show or film, and halfway through the episode I wanted to punch that bag in its non-existent face or roughly pull its zipper back and forth until it caught on something and got stuck. Take that, bag! That satchel represented more than just a place to stash old receipts and gum, it was the symbol of Winona's incredibly poor judgment (at least she admitted it) and both her and Raylan's questionable future.

    As far as we know, Raylan and Winona got away with it in the end by stashing the evidence in a new locker to give the appearance that it was misplaced, and in the last shot of the bag, now empty, deflated, and carelessly tucked under Winona's arm, it looked absolutely defeated, didn't it? You lose, BAG! While that crime may be under the rug, it appears that Art-who ain't no dummy-at least has an inkling that something shady went down in the basement and that Raylan may not be the upstanding gentleman he appears to be. Sigh... the things we do for our ex-wives who we're currently sleeping with.

    Good old Boyd found himself a new job, though I'm not sure he accepted it as much as it ensnared him. He's running security for an executive-Carol-of the coal company he works for, and of course there's something in store for him that's not in the job description. Carol struck me as iffy when we first met her, but I think she's going to grow on me. Not that I trust her enough to let her borrow my sweatshirt or anything like that. She's after the Bennetts, but why? Is she somehow connected to the Dixie Mafia?

    This was the second consecutive Bennett-free episode, but the quality of the last two episodes has been so great, I've hardly missed that crazy family. It looks like they come back in a big way next week though, so make sure you're belts are buckled.moreless

  • Two For the Money

    With Winona's past mistake involving the $100 bill it is revealed that she may have taken all of the cash so it's up to Raylan and her to put it back without anybody noticing. It doesn't help that the Court House and the Marshal's Office are under heavy security for a current case though. Boyd becomes acquainted with a woman, Carol, an executive of the mining company he works for and she wants him to be on her security detail. What really strikes me is how the paths of Boyd and Raylan always seem to weave together in the most unpredictable of ways so good on the writers for giving Boyd a new arc when they could just as easily have less of him. This episode was filled with thrills and pay offs of past characters, like seeing Judge Reardon again, is certainly welcome to us veteran viewers. What Justified is really excelling at now is the hashing out of its minor characters, particularly Tim and Rachel who seemed more like one dimensional expendable marshals last season to me who now are getting thrown some time to show their personalities. Also how the season long arc ultimately is always moving toward the Bennetts and Raylan and many others and with more than half of the season over it's time to get back in the main story saddle and give us some more Mags and her sons.moreless

    Always believable and low key... suspense with no melodramatics. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant writing and acting.

    Just how this show keeps up the consistency is beyond me. Its so good like the best films or books, you are almost sad whilst you are watching it or reading it that you know eventually it has to come to an end; its a finite time you can spend in this fantasy world with these fictional characters.

    So many subltleties in this episode; the telling pain Boyd has when he realises he's been entrapped in a role he's not prepared for, somehow he's feeling trapped by fate here; the beautiful scene in the court room when Raylan gives his opinion on Boyd's fidelity; the mastery of the final scenes when Raylan's boss encounters him and Winona hiding the loot and whilst he doesn't actually see the money being stashed, he knows that something's fishy and clearly makes the connection between this and the goings on earlier in the day. We can feel Raylan's terrible certainty that he's been "rumbled" and that his relationship with his boss will never be the same and that his boss perhaps now will let it go because he knows that Raylan is basically a good guy and whatever went down he is now putting it right. But who knows??? Such a real sense of characters thinking and reacting in realistic ways, all in the space of a few seconds AND mostly without a word being said! Fantastic. It makes me want to watch it over and over again.

    If you're wondering about this show, just watch the darned program and learn what EVERY other show is lacking; you just never knew how good TV could be :-). This show deserves MAJOR recognition, and I just hope it can go from strength to strength and last for as many seasons as the writers and actors can stand :-)))moreless

    I really don't like drama. I like action, with a touch of comedy on the side. But I still love Justified, even though they tend to be a bit light on the action and slightly heavy on the drama.
    Tonights episode focused on trying to undo Winona's Bit Mistake - she finally confesses to Raylan that she took ALL the money from the evidence locker, and now he has to try and fix things to keep her from possible jailtime.
    He has a nice, simple plan - only nothing's ever simple in Harlan county, is it.
    Capricious judges, bomb threats, all too efficient co-workers and just plain bad luck haunts the couple as they try and try and TRY to get the money back under lock and key at the courthouse.

    In the end, they DO get it back, but only after the marshals have all seen that it's missing - and when Art shows up just as they're finishing up, there's a wealth of meaning in a few innocuous phrases and a lot of silences - he knows, and they know that he knows, and he knows that they know that he knows...

    Otherwise, it was a fairly so-so episode - no Bennett clan, no guns fired, etc.
    But a few brilliant moments managed to find their way in none the less:
    Raylan, describing his history with Boyd (and the fact that he can be trusted - within limits) is followed by the brilliant observation from Boyd's new boss; It sounds like a lovestory. :D
    In fact, the whole scene with her, Boyd and Raylan in the courtroom is one of the best scenes of the entire episode.moreless

    I expected, because the episode focused on my least favorite character, that I'd hate it. Surprisingly, the episode was fast paced and enjoyable. It also introduced a new character (I bet she represents the Dixie Mafia) who will impact Boyd in an intriguing way. I am only disappointed that we are not seeing more of Ava this season. I hope the writers find a way to reinsert her into the story arc.

    I must admit, I'm hoping the incident of the stolen evidence money is not quite over. I'm thinking it should have more of a negative effect on Winona - either she is eventually prosecuted or Raylan starts to feel differently about her. Then, we can revisit the Boyd, Raylan, and Ava triangle.moreless
