Hyacinth doesn't miss much, in fact, she makes it her business to know as much about as many people as possible and nothing pleases her more than sticking her nose into the affairs of her friends and neighbours.
In this first episode of Season 2, it is poor Elizabeth Warden (Josephine Tewson) from next door who is the object of Hyacinth's interest when she, Hyacinth, sees a strange man, draped in a towel, collecting the milk from the doorstep early in the morning. Naturally, Hyacinth assumes the worst and hysterically informs Richard that Elizabeth has a lover who has obviously spent the night at her home because there can be no other reason for him to be there, scantily clad, so early in the morning!
Richard is reluctant to believe that Elizabeth, whose husband works abroad, would be involved in an affair, but Hyacinth is totally convinced and informs Richard that they will have to move house due to the 'continental atmosphere' which is obviously prevailing in the neighbourhood! Naturally, Richard is most unhappy with this idea, and even more worried when Hyacinth insists that he go next door and tell Elizabeth of the dangers faced by women living alone who get involved with strange men. Furious at Richard's reluctance, Hyacinth decides to visit Elizabeth herself. Richard soon follows after taking a call from Daisy in which he learns that Daddy has once again disappeared, this time, wearing only his long johns!
Upon arrival next door, Richard is about to give his rehearsed speech about women who get involved with strange men when Hyacinth abruptly stops him to inform him that the 'strange man' is indeed Elizabeth's brother, Emmet (David Griffin), a classically trained musician who has moved in with his sister after losing his house in a messy divorce.
Naturally, Hyacinth blames the entire mix-up on poor Richard, while contemplating a musical career for herself once Emmet has heard her sing!
A laugh-a-minute episode not to be missed.moreless
