It can never be said that Hyacinth really thinks of anything except how something will appear to other people. With this in mind, when Richard's birthday comes around, she decides that he has to appear more athletic and vital and so, obviously, the perfect gift for this retired gent is a pair of skis.

Richard has never beeon on skis in his life and he is understandably reluctant to start now but Hyacinth is insistent and has them strapped to the roof rack of the car where they look very impressive but unfortunately, do not make Richard any more likely to use them ...

This episode epitomises how Hyacinth does things without thinking about anything other than literally, appearances. The reality and the big picture always seem to elude her which is one of the reasons why this show is such a comedy classic.moreless
