King of the Hill

Season 1 Episode 2

Square Peg

Aired Sunday 8:30 AM Jan 19, 1997 on FOX

  • Trivia

    • Hank says that Peggy is teaching a bunch of fifth graders, however, Bobby is in Grade 7, not 5.

    • Hank says that the permission form HAD to be signed by both parents. It seems the school isn't very inclusive of its students who may have only one parent.

    • Peggy says that the book she was given had "only pictures of flowers" however when she opened it, it had scribbles, which looked to be writing, and no pictures.

    • In the scene where Hank is cutting down some branches and Bill comes out the tree is much further out from the fence then in the rest of the episode.

    • Dooley seems to imply that he will be in the Sex Ed class but he isn't shown in that scene.

  • Quotes

    • Bobby: (holding 2 male dolls) You want my Chandler, or my Ross?
Joseph: Can I shoot him FULL OF BBs?
      Bobby: Okay
      Joseph: Then Ross.

    • Peggy: (to a mirror) Happiness... Happy-ness. Ha-penis... (breathes) penis. Oh! I did it!

    • Hank: No need for Bobby to get all bothered up learning about sex when he can't do a damn thing about it anyway, at his age... and with his features.

    • Dooley: Your mom's gonna teach sex ed.
      Bobby: Yeah.
Dooley: We're gonna get to see her boobs.
      Bobby: I guess so.
Dooley (to someone else): Your dad lost his job.

    • Hank: answers the phone Hello?
Dale: on other end, disguising his voice You don't know who I am, but I know where you live. And if you teach that Sex Ed class so help me, I'll-
      Hank: Dale, is that you?
Dale: normal voice Oh Hank. Can I speak with Peggy?
Hank: sets down phone and walks away Peggy, it's for you. It's Dale.
Peggy: picks up phone Hello, Dale.
Dale: disguises voice You don't know who I am, but I know where you live.
Peggy: on answering machine You have reached the Hill residence. Please leave a message at the tone.
Dale: disguised voice You don't know who I am. But I know where you live, Sex Ed teacher. And you better cut it out if you know what's good for you. normal voice Oh, and Hank, we changed that tee-off time to 3:00. See ya.

    • Peggy: Bobby, honey, um -- what do you know about sexual relations?
Bobby: I don't know. Nothing much. I'm a little worried about being a slut.

    • Hank: Nobody likes a know-it-all who sits around talking about their genitalia!

    • Hank: Stay tuned for the X-Files. I thought it was some kind of porno because of the name, but it turns out it's about two young people who don't have sex. Now that's entertainment.

  • Notes

    • The song playing at the end of the episode is "I Won't Need You Anymore (Always & Forever)" by Randy Travis. It was mentioned earlier in the episode that Peggy likes Randy Travis' music.

    • It is shown that Peggy has won a "Substitute Teacher of the Year Award". These don't really exist.

    • This episode was nominated for the 1997 Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or Less).

    • The original FOX broadcasts of this episode ended with a tag where Hank talks to the audience and introduces "The X-Files," which followed King of the Hill at that time. (The tag used the same animation as the tag from "Hank's Unmentionable Problem.") In most syndication versions and on DVD, this tag is replaced by the regular credits and theme music.

  • Allusions

    • When Bobby offers Joseph his Chandler or his Ross he is refering to the characters Chandler Bing and Ross Gellar, two main characters on the hit sitcom Friends.
