Episode Summary

There's a problem in the castle! King Dedede's ratings for Channel DDD have gone to zero. King Dedede learns that the cause of this is the book "Pappey Pottey and the Fool's Stone" (a parody of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"). King Dedede swipes a copy, but it's useless to him, as... HE CAN'T READ! Escargoon takes off with the king's copy, and Dedede listens in as Tiff reads to her friends and Tuff. When King Dedede learns later that nobody finished the book yet, he snatches every copy, and bans the book from Dreamland. That done, he then somehow downloads the author from NME, and she suggests they turn the castle into a magic school. After turning out to be moreinterested in money than the spirit of writing (or her fans), she decides they should play a game on flying brooms... with Kirby as the ball! Before things get too far out of hand, Meta-Knight appears with... the author? Exposed, the fake author reveals her true form, the Broom King, who even fooled Dedede, and was sent to get rid of Kirby. But Kirby will have none of that...moreless

Illiteracy is not a good thing, especially if you're King Dedede! With the ratings falling down to zero the King is interested in knowing why no one's watching his awful TV show. It seems the people of Cappy Town have become enthralled with a new book called 'Pappy Pottey and the Fool's Stone'. Dedede is not amused, especially considering since as he can't read he can't find out the end of the book. So he brings forth a new monster to deal with the towns people. This episode's a real page turner but one question remains: why is the monster Dedede's sent for the author of Pappy Pottey?

Having seen enough episodes of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! one conclusion I've come to about the series is that the whole show is at its best when it's satirising a particular subject area. In this case the famous adventures of a certain boy wizard are parodied to such an extent that if I were to say 'Pappy Pottey' is based on a certain franchise of books by J. K. Rowling my observation would of course be a total coincidence. Therefore for the remainder of this review I shall not refer to the franchise of novels by their real name. You see 'Pappy Pottey' is so heavily making fun (although at the same time embracing) of J. K. Rowling's Harry…erm…novels that legal issues prevent Nintendo from even repeating this episode through their Nintendo Wii Kirby Channel. Episode Unavailable? No doubt because of lawsuits…Worth knowing though such was the power of J. K. Rowling's success 4Kids postponed the original airing so that it could be shown to tie in with the launch of one more novel in the er, real 'Pappy Pottey' franchise. The writers have a great time not only poking fun at the boy wizard series fandom but also making a point that not being able to read definitely limits what you can do in life like reading about the many adventures of Pappy Pottey. Everything Dedede does to Cappy Town's people is as usual out of jealousy. If he can't read no one can so he bans all copies of 'Pappy Pottey and the Fool's Stone'. The show's satire is on top form here with Dedede then proceeding to mail order a NE monster which turns out to be J. K. Rowling?! Don't worry guys, it's only a monster posing as the author, the real one turns up later to reveal this, explaining she writes these books out of enthusiasm, not money as the fake Rowling before stated. Ha, ha! So we have an evil J. K. Rowling displaying nothing but greed who shows everyone how to play a Dreamland version of Quidditch with Kirby as well, the ball. When fake Rowling turns into Broom King we get a battle between a newly transformed 'Cleaning Kirby' in a sequence that will have you chuckling like one of the author's fictional school kids. A Novel Approach is the series satire at its best, proving to us that Kirby's adventures could be both intelligent and humorous at the same time. J. K. Rowling would be proud and if not she should be. Now please excuse me, I feel like going to read the sequel 'Pappy Pottey and the Chambray of Secrets' ().moreless

    • Villain: Broom King. He's walkin' tall, and talkin' tough, but this big broom with a crown isn't capable of much more than creating perfect disguises for himself, and controlling people's minds with his flying broom brigade. If he needs to attack, he can whack foes with his broom handle and kick up nasty dust storms, but he prefers to let his brooms do the dusty, er, dirty work for him. Edit
    • The power is actually Cleaning Kirby, as opposed to Broom Kirby. Edit
    • The day this episode premiered is the same day that book five in the "Harry Potter" series, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" was released. Edit
