Answer to earlier nitpick: Actually, Robotnik is called Dr. Eggman in Sonic Adventure 2, so it's not a mistake on the show's part.
For an unknown reason, Dr. Robotnik is called "Dr. Eggman" (his Japanese name) in this special. The same mistake occurs in "Sonic X" itself.
