  • With warning of a planned assassination of visting Third World leaders by a member of a bodyguard driving school, Devon sends Michael undercover at the academy to try and deduce who the assassin might be. Not a classic, but a decent enough episode...moreless

It's odd – I always think of 'A Plush Ride' as coming from later in the season. Either way, it is a decent first season episode, and probably one of the more memorable.

One thing that does always strike me (when remembering its correct position in the season), that it feels in many ways very similar to 'Inside Out', broadcast only two episodes previously. The two certainly do have a number of similarities, with both involving Michael infiltrating a group of professionals and undergoing intense training as he tries to prevent a big upcoming crime.

...Not that that's a bad thing, as both are enjoyable enough stories.

Of the guest cast, fans of such TV shows of the era will no doubt recognise William Lucking, a regular TV guest star, familiar to many as Colonel Lynch from early episodes of 'The A-Team'. Margot is played by Wendy Faulton, wife of 'The A-Team's Dwight Schultz (and who appeared in the popular third season episode 'Bounty' of that series).

The plot is a reasonable one, although production feels a little "clunky" in places – as with many first season episodes, things are definitely not as slick as in subsequent seasons. However, there is an interesting enough story to forgive this.

As I've commented in some reviews for previous episodes, one thing I do notice in these first season episodes is the terrible graphics on K.I.T.T.'s monitors. Check it out during the scene where Michael is being hunted during a training mission – this time, it's not even a computer graphic, but quite literally a simplistic colouring book-like drawing of some foliage! The monitor graphics at the climax of the episode, of K.I.T.T. and the enemy cars are very crude, but at least they look like an actual computer.

Anyway, other than that, this is a passable enough episode, and fun trying to guess who the would-be assassin is. This definitely wouldn't make my personal Top 10 episodes list, but compared to some of the first season's more average plots, this one is at least slightly more memorable. I still think it would have fared better placed further apart from the quite similar 'Inside Out' (and between the pair, I would say that 'Inside Out' is the stronger of the two), but on its own basis, this is not a bad episode at all. I give it a reasonable 9 out of 10.moreless

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • When Jacobs punches KITT's door after he is unable to get inside the car, he actually can be seen to make a small dent in the door.

    • After Michael and KITT have stopped the assassins at the climax of the story, the shots of Devon as he comes out of the marquee to greet Michael are flipped back-to-front: his hair style is suddenly reversed, and the handkerchief in his blazer pocket is suddenly on the other side.

    • The three planes that deliver the three third world leaders in rapid succession are all obviously the same plane with a different made-up country's emblem pasted to the side.

    • Michael meets Bonnie and Devon at a bar called the Buckaroo Club. This is the same name as the bar frequented by Colt Seaver and company on The Fall Guy, another show from Glen A. Larson.

    • When Margot is driving on to the airfield you can clearly see KITT is next to her through her driver side rear window. In the next shot we see KITT race from far behind her, we then return to the 1st shot to see KITT overtake her.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • KITT: With your usual lack of subtlety, you would have no problem at all in panicking anyone with anything at all to hide. Actually, we might go so far as...
      Michael: KITT?
      KITT: Yes, Michael, I know.
      Michael: Shut up.

    • Bonnie: Michael, what is this?!
      Michael: Seaweed.
Bonnie: What is seaweed doing under KITT's hood?
Michael: Oh, yeah, well, I can explain that.
      KITT: Perhaps you shouldn't, Michael.

    • Redmond: Devvy, come on, I'll buy you a beer!
      Devon: "Devvy?!"
