  • Michael and KITT meet Wilton knight's evil biological son, Garthe, of whom Michael's face was molded. Garthe was supposed to be in a South African prison for life, but he busts out and creates Goliath, a semi-truck with KITT's molecular bonded shell.moreless

A good episode. This is the first time KITT has ever been wrecked. Although I find it unbelieveable that Michael would be stupid enough to go head to head with Goliath and think it would knock out Goliath's front wheel. I also find it unbelieveable that Garthe would settle for ramming KITT only once. I would also have to believe that KITT would svwerve out of the way to protect Michael.

This was supposed to be a demonstration for some corrupt South African officials, but I doubt they'd be impressed because they have no idea what the hell KITT is. It would just look like a semi truck destroyed a little Trans Am.

Despite these holes, it is a great episode to watch.moreless
  • KITT vs. Goliath! Do I have to say more?

If you like Knight Rider, this episode along with the second part is a "must see" episode. Both KITT and Michael find their own matches when they have confront Goliath, a massive trailer with the same molecular shield that KITT has and Garth Knight, the true son of the late Wilton Knight. Few times you can see an adversary that has a real chance to beat KITT.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The "WIN" sound that plays(When KITT wins a hand of blackjack after doubling down and getting a face card to to make 21) is from the video Game "TRON"

  • QUOTES (3)

    • (reacting to the sight of Goliath on his monitor)
KITT: It appears to be a large... My goodness. Large isn't the word. It's enormous.

    • KITT: (scanning Goliath) My sensors detect the vehicle in question is armored with my protective shell. Michael, surely you're not planning to go nose-to-nose with that behemoth.
Michael: That's what I want Garthe to think, pal. But if we're quick enough, we can knock out his right front wheel.

    • Garthe Knight: Michael Knight is a living, breathing insult to my existence.

  • NOTES (8)

    • The German title of this episode has "Goliaths Geburt" appended, meaning "Goliath's Birth"

    • Series star Edward Mulhare and guest Barbara Rush can also be seen together in the Matt Houston episode "Whose Party is it Anyway?"

    • "Goliath" originally aired as a special two-hour episode. For syndication, it has been divided into two one-hour parts, resulting in cuts and trims to allow time for the extra sets of credits and the "previously on Knight Rider" recap. The original two hour presentation has been restored for the DVD boxed set release.

    • The writers were torn between two songs to use for Garthe's theme: "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Gimme Shelter," both by the Rolling Stones. The episode uses "Gimme Shelter."

    • The ramjet makes its first appearance in the second draft. Originally, Michael and K.I.T.T. attempted to leave the desert as slowly as possible; the shooting version saw them lose control, travelling at over 300 mph.

    • The first draft gives Garthe a limp -- presumably obtained while he was in Africa, although never explained. The idea was dropped, however, to keep him as Michael's physical match.

    • Although David Hasselhoff plays both Michael and Garthe Knight in this story, he is only credited on-screen for playing Michael.

    • For this season, Rebecca Holden plays April Curtis, KITT's new technician. She was brought in after Patricia McPherson (Bonnie) pushed the shows writers & producers to give her character more to do, possibly including a romance with Michael!
Although April was not unpopular, many fans missed Bonnie and wrote in to ask for the character to return, which she eventually did at the start of the third season.
