    (Review continued from part one...)

The second half of the Pilot concentrates more on Michael's first mission, as he seeks revenge on those who left him for dead.

I've always liked the Pilot, but watching it on DVD tonight to review, I'd almost forgotten just HOW good it is. This second half is spectacular, with lots of impressive stunts and action.

One thing I like about this episode is that, even away from K.I.T.T., Michael is more than able to hold his own; often in later episodes, the writers would have K.I.T.T. coming to the rescue (often with some new added feature that just happened to be the key of solving that week's case), but here, Michael does not purely rely on K.I.T.T.

I also like the two car thieves and their repeated failed attempts to steal K.I.T.T. Many episodes would feature 'comedy guest characters' in various guises and these two goons get that tradition off to a fine start.

A number of sequences of this Pilot were later recycled in other episodes in various forms, but I'll get to them in due course as I review them.

My only minor niggle about this story is the whole "industrial saboteurs" thing; We get it that Tanya is planning to pull of some huge robbery of "important plans and designs" of some sort, but this is never really explained in any great depth, leaving this element of the plot slightly confused and unfocused. Thankfully, this can be forgiven, as the rest of the proceedings are so enjoyable that it doesn't really matter.

All-in-all, this is a great Pilot worthy of the classic series. I give this second half 10 out of 10.moreless
  • The undisputed best!

In my opinion, the two part Knight of the Phoenix episode is by far the series best. As great as this series was and as big a fan as I am of this classic show, I feel the series never quite equaled the beginning. The story of how Michael Knight became who he was, and seeing him meet K.I.T.T. for the very first time. You see K.I.T.T. scare off theives trying to steal him, K.I.T.T. going through a semi, you see numerous turbo boosts, Michael being ejected 100 feet onto a roof, And if that wasn't enough, the end where Michael and K.I.T.T. were being chased at all angles by a helicopter and semis, K.I.T.T. turbo boosts clear over a moving semi!moreless
  • Kitt is indeed a funny car but also dangerous!

KITT is indeed a very dangerous car as well as

Also very silly as Micheal finds out as this will

Be the first of their many, many, adventures ahead of them

Michael is also very heavily trained in martial arts and throws out all of the people in the bar! Very funny and a great way to start a show!

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • When the truck parks across the road and KITT turbo boosts through the side of the trailer, if you look carefully you can see the second where the regular trailer has been removed and a mock-up of it has been inserted for the stunt.

    • During the climatic nighttime sequences, there are two shots of KITT driving along a ridge, where the sun is clearly coming up. However, in all surrounding shots, it is still the dead of night.

    • Michael is shot in the left shoulder. However, when he and KITT are driving to the airport, there are several times when he clutches his right shoulder instead.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • KITT: If you're going through with this, may I suggest you permit me to activate the turbo boost?
      Michael: The what?
KITT: Never mind. Allow me to demonstrate.
(KITT turbo boosts through the Comtron truck)

    • Devon: KITT, can he make it?
KITT: You want the truth? In front of him?
Michael: If I'm goin' out, I'm taking them with me.

    • Michael: Look, KITT, I gotta get up to a roof about a hundred feet.
KITT: Very well. If you'll set the pressure adjustment for precisely 600 pounds, you should land quite gently.
Michael: That's it? I just set the pressure and then hit the button?
KITT: It would help if you also opened the auto roof.
      Michael: Smart-aleck car.

    • Carney: Hey, I want to know what that machine of yours is made of.
      Michael: Sit and spin.

  • NOTES (4)

    • Although not directly featured in the story, the Knight Industries truck can be glimpsed briefly in the penultimate scene in the story (when KITT is being towed). This version of the trailer is black with a gold 'Knight Industries' logo. From the next episode, the trailer is all-white, before having its more familiar black with gold Knight chess piece design for the mid-season onwards.

    • The Czech episode title is "Michael Knight".

    • Music: "Harden My Heart" originally by Quarterflash; "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" originally by Pat Benatar

    • This is the first of Pamela Susan Shoop's two, unrelated appearances on Knight Rider. She can also be seen in the two-hour, season four premiere, "Knight of the Juggernaut."
