Sid tells his family how much he loves them, and after they leave he makes a private tape recording for Karen. The neighbors all keep vigil with the Fairgates during the operation, and Karen and Gary make up. In the operating room, something goes horribly wrong. The doctor finally comes out, and Karen can see by his face that Sid has died. Everyone is crying and in shock. • TRIVIA (1)

      • Even though Sid's death was due to an off-camera contract dispute, this episode started a classic Knots Landing trait used throughout the series. The "untimely death" that was a sudden surprise mid-season and not used as a cliffhanger. Knots Landing became known for some of the best mid-season cliff hangers ever written. Other examples include, but aren't limited to: Season 11 Episode 24 "Only Just Begun" when Pat was run over. Season 12 Episode 3 "God Will" when the last shot is a pan up through a swimming pool to Danny's lifeless body. And Season 13 Episode 3 "Eye of the Beholder" when Linda's throat was slit right before the closing credits.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Sid (his final words in a taped message): When I think about the operation being a success, ya know I think about all the wonderful things I could do with a healthy body, like travel around the world, build that race car, all those crazy kinda superficial things. But then... I realize that none of that matters. All I really want is what I already have... waking up with you every morning, sleeping next to you at night, just living with you and the kids, having our family together. There's no words to tell you how much that meant to me. ...If the chance didn't work, and you're listening to this now, I want you to know that I don't have any regrets. I love you, Karen. And whatever happens to me, my love for you will never die.

    • NOTES (3)

      • This episode marks the first appearance of Marcia Solomon, who played Karen's faithful secretary, Marsha, for most of the series' run.

      • According to TV Guide, the reason why Don Murray ("Sid") left the show was due to a contract dispute he had with the producers and at the same time, he wanted to work on a movie career.

      • Don Murray ("Sid") makes his final appearance on the series in this episode.
