Here's another one for the "Future Animals" thread. Actually, this one is just a group description, but it does hold references to a few of the more notable members of the group. MAJOR thanks to Catfan1 AND 3StarvingArtist for their help on this one:

    The History Scouts

A youth organization of (mostly) puppies and kittens (though there ARE a few members of OTHER species in the group too) founded in the mid-23rd Century to help spread the legacy of the galaxy's greatest heroes.

Professor Tralfaz began to think about the new group in response to questions from youngsters curious about the Dog Star Squadron. He was encouraged by teammate Air Dale, who thought the project might help build Tralfaz's confidence as he was still learning to be a superhero himself at this point.

The History Scouts are asked to aspire to the highest ethical standards at all times. They may earn history badges by conducting their own small-scale "superhero" projects to help others. They also occasionally take field trips to witness important events in superhero history such as Krypto the Superdog's first meeting with the original Dog Star Patrol, the origin of Streaky the Supercat or the very first case Krypto, Streaky, Ace, the Dog Star Patrol, Stretch-O-Mutt, Superman and Batman ALL worked together on (but usually from the safety of an invisible force field and only for events seen as not posing any dangers). Occasionally, the members have even helped bail the good professor out of dangerous situations.

Members with questions about the group's mission may consult the History Scout Guide, the ultimate electronic encyclopedia of superhero lore and source of advice on everything from how to escape most death traps to the different forms of Kryptonite and their effects. To anyone unfamiliar with 23rd century technology, the device's ability to instantly answer so many questions definitively seems almost magical, but it is actually the result of extensive research by Tralfaz who has incorporated the work of the greatest historians of the past two centuries into the device's database. On more than one occasion, it was able to instantly calculate the exact hideout and method of operation of less imaginative criminals.

Members include unofficial leader X-Ray Dale (nephew of Air Dale and a part Kryptonian puppy with all of the powers that happen to be related to eyesight, including, telescopic vision, X-ray vision and heat vision), Zeus (a super-strong chihuahua who also has the ability to shoot strong electrical blasts from his forepaws [he is also a descendant of both Mammoth Mutt AND Tusky Husky]), Amphitrite (a female sheepdog with strong [and only barely controllable] hydrokinetic and cryokinetic powers [she is also a Drooly descendant]) and Singa Pura (a young kitten learning to control her sonic purring powers). Contrary to what the four above examples would have you think, most of the members are not super-powered (though they ARE completely dedicated and, for their ages, extremely skilled and resourceful) and membership is open to any young animal willing to take the group's oath of loyalty to the super hero cause.

Despite the group's apparent success, Dash Hound has been known to deride it as "The Starhound Fan Club," since several of the members, including (and especially) X-Ray Dale, DO greatly admire the professor. Air Dale however, is pleased and is happy that his nephew has become one of the groups' most honored scouts.

Tralfaz was the first adult leader but, as he grew more and more into his Starhound role and ended up away on Dog Star Squadron missions more and more, has since become too busy to continue this level of 'paws-on' involvement and the duties have been taken up by other like-minded animals who follow his original guidelines.

Many of the scouts continued their interest in superheroing as they matured and eventually formed their own junior version of the Dog Star Squadron.

Well, here's a file for the villain of the "Riddles of the Sphinx" tale, Catfan1 and I did. As usual, thanks go to Catfan1 for his help. Ladsone also deserves thanks for coming up with Enigma (who is alluded to here) and dontebell deserves credit for coming up with the Scarecrow's pet crows (who are ALSO alluded to here).

    The Sphinx

    Time Period: mid-23rd century

    Species: Wolfhound/shepherd mix (male)

Appearance: Tall, muscular canine resembling a yellow wolfhound with the nose of a German Shepherd, wearing a black mask with a matching super-suit with silver forepaw gauntlets, a silver collar and a dark blue cape capable of folding out into working wings (see Abilities/Equipment)

Abilites/Equipment: Skilled fighter, strategist and tactician. Slightly above average athlete. extensive knowledge of weaponry, especially that used by the original Bat Hound. Excellent mechanical and chemical ability (specifically used for devising specialized weapons and traps of his own creation). His super-suit (designed to make him look more like a mythological creature) contains exoskeleton circuitry designed to augment his strength and reflexes to a level that would make him formidable even to most super-animals one-on-one, a cape that can convert into wings that allow the Sphinx to actually fly, thought-activated retractable energy claws (built-into the ends of his gauntlets), a pair of thought-activated freeze ray blasters mounted on the wrist array of said gauntlets (this is also intended to reference Mister Freeze's polar bears) and a collar designed to spray out a powerful fear gas via thought activated gas jets (this is intended to reference the Scarecrow and his pet crows) .

Personality: He is seriously vain about his knowledge of superhero and villain animals and considers himself a self-taught expert, to the point of being obsessed with superhero trivia. But similar to Batman's foe, the Riddler, he was, back in his super-criminal days, compelled to test his foes before committing a major crime or doing away with his enemies. This usually took the form of challenging clues or questions about superhero history (he still obsessively asks the superhero history questions to his opponents, but he keeps his games completely legal nowadays). Usually pretty serious, but when asking his questions, he often takes on a glib manner resembling that of a TV game show host. Ever since his first encounter with Professor Tralfaz, the Sphinx has developed a further obsession with ultimately getting the better of the collie, as the Sphinx views Tralfaz as the one being in the universe who poses a legitimate threat to him concerning his precious super-hero/super-villain trivia supremacy.

Background: Spot grew up greatly admiring superhero animals and even dreamed of being one himself. But, despite his natural intellect and respectable physical prowess, he lacked the drive and dedication to pass the space ranger academy, spending his time playing and studying superhero trivia.

Forced to leave the academy, the embittered canine then decided to find a way to use his knowledge against the forces of law and order. After devising a super-suit designed to not only emulate the super-villain animals of legend, but also make himself more strongly resemble a creature of mythology, Spot began calling himself "'the Sphinx'".

The trivia obsessed villain then began a weeks-long crime spree, stealing superhero and villain artifacts and becoming major thorn in the side of the Space Rangers. Once, after breaking into the Bat Hound Museum, he was compelled to wait for Space Rangers Air Dale and Valiant to arrive and after trapping the two, forcing them to answer a series of questions before the two narrowly escaped his trap.

The Sphinx was finally stopped only when historian Professor Tralfaz became involved in the case, the collie's seeming ability to answer any superhero question causing much frustration for the villain. The case was Tralfaz's first time in action against a super villain. The Sphinx is also known by some self-given nicknames, including the Quiz Hound, Data Dog and Master Information. Since then, the Sphinx had remained in prison for a fair number of dog years but, after he served his time and got out, Sphinx resumed his battle of wits with Tralfaz (now Starhound), the two developing a feud pretty similiar to that of Batman and the Riddler (or, for that matter, Bat Hound and Enigma).

However, ever since his previous incarceration, the Sphinx has been far more careful about doing anything truly illegal. He's converted his obsessions with puzzles and super-hero trivia into a successful toy and game line and is now a reasonably respected businessdog (he just can't resist continuing to challenge Tralfaz to personal games of trivia question exchanges and games of wits, so he can fufill all of his obsessions without doing anything illegal that would get him thrown back in prison if he lost).

Here's the profile for X-Ray Dale, Air Dale's nephew and unofficial leader of the History Scouts. As usual, my thanks go out to both Catfan1 (who also had the idea in the first place) AND 3StarvingArtist. :-D

    X-Ray Dale

    Time period: 23rd Century

Species: Assorted breeds (including a trace amount of Kryptonian canine), but predominantly alien airedale terrier.

Appearance: Mauve-colored mixed breed puppy (but predominantly airedale terrier in appearance). He wears dark goggles when in uniform.

Abilities: Has all of the typical Kryptonian powers that are associated with eyesight (that would be not just X-ray vision [this is where he derives his name from], but also telescopic, microscopic, infra-red and even heat visions); although at a slightly lesser intensity than a full-Kryptonian, such as Krypto. He is also a good detective, leader, and tactician for his age and has above-average skills in paw-to-paw combat (though he's nowhere near as good in the last area as his comrade Pal Shee'lded).

Personality: Fun-loving, bold and very loyal to his friends, he is also reasonably intelligent though he IS still a puppy and can be easily tripped up by his impatience and impulsiveness. He is also capable of being a little mischievous at times, but he is never mischievous in a mean-spirited way. He has a very strong personality, and is a natural leader.

Background: X-Ray Dale is the nephew of Dog Star Squadron second-in-command Air Dale and the unofficial youth leader of the History Scouts. A great admirer of Professor Tralfaz, his interest in superheroes led him to meet the professor while accompanying his uncle on a routine tour of the Dog Star spacecraft. In fact, the meeting and Dale's enthusiasm indirectly led to the forming of the History Scouts. His leadership skills cause him to act as unofficial leader, backed up by his close friend Zeus (who also happens to be X-Ray Dale's distant cousin). Zeus is very loyal and capable himself although he doesn't yet have the same level of confidence as Dale. Young Dale's enthusiasm has also been an inspiration to Professor Tralfaz as the latter learned the intricacies of becoming a superhero himself. In fact, Dale has helped get Starhound out of at least one tight spot, using his abilities and some quick thinking. Dash often refers to the pup as 'Little D' and his uncle as 'Big D.'

Thanks for getting X-Ray Dale's profile up, CK. It was a lot of fun working with you and StarvingArtist on that and the other characters we've been discussing.   BTW, sorry I haven't been around much lately but I promise I'll try to be a little more active with stories and characters soon!

Thanks, Catfan1. I appreciate that. Anyway, I'm about to post another one that I have to thank both Catfan1 AND 3StarvingArtist for helping me with. Here's the profile for the History Scout, Zeus (not to be confused with Zeus the Hypercat, the first born son of Lightning the Supercat and Empress over in the KWLS universe [see post 71 of this very thread]). Here we go.

    Name: Zeus

Species: Mixed breed (including VERY trace amounts of alien husky and Kryptonian canine), but primarily alien Chihuahua (male).

Appearance: Cobalt-furred mix-breed puppy with silver areas on his face, tail-tip, and shoulders. Is slightly larger then a purebred Chihuahua puppy, and has semi-long fur (though his coat isn’t as long as a husky puppy’s). He wears a gold-colored lightning bolt-shaped tag/pendant.

Abilities: Zeus possesses a measure of super-strength and endurance (even in his relatively early puppyhood, his strength and endurance is 1,000 times greater than that of a normal pup his size, breed and age, and it's very possible that his relative strength and endurance could increase even more than that as he gets older). He also has the ability to shoot strong electrical blasts from his forepaws (but not ridiculously strong electrical blasts). Furthermore, he's also a reasonably adept paw-to-paw fighter and tactician when he absolutely needs to be.

Personality: As a youngster, he's somewhat shy and not overly-talkative, which makes his strength and endurance all the more surprising. But he is pretty intelligent, quick-thinking and very determined when it's called for. He’s also very loyal to his fellow History Scouts and his best friend/distant cousin X-Ray Dale in particular, and is also very knowledgeable and interested in superhero history, including his own family background.

Background: Zeus is a charter member of the History Scouts. As a descendant of Mammoth Mutt, Tusky Husky AND Krypto himself (in fact, it was from the Kryptonian canine in his blood line that Zeus developed his super-strength and endurance [even though the strength and endurance are still nowhere near that of a full-Kryptonian canine and he doesn't have the powers of either of his two other Dog Star ancestors]), he was already well acquainted with other super-powered animals and quickly became friends with X-Ray Dale at an early age (it helps that X-Ray Dale is another Krypto descendant [albeit from a more distant branch than Zeus]). Dale's encouragement led him to join the History Scouts as part of his goal of becoming a hero himself. He has gradually gained in confidence since joining the organization, becoming less shy along the way and much more proficient in the use of his powers, even saving the day on at least a couple of occasions by catching the bad guys off guard with his powers.

Here are two more members of the History Scouts. As usual, I have to give credit to ComicKook and Catfan for their advice and ideas for these guys. Can anyone take a guess as to who they're based on?

    Name: Sarru and Sarista.

    Time Period: 23rd century.

Species: Alien lemurs (male and female respectively).

Description: Both are mostly white-furred twin alien lemur cubs, with yellow fur covering their ears, muzzles, much of their forelimbs, and their tails, and purple-furred “bandit masks” on their faces. The closest species of Earth lemur that they bear a resemblance to are ruffed lemurs.

Abilities: Sarru: The power of hydrokinises: he can mentally control the movement and temperature of most liquids within his immediate area and personally assume any water-based form (even if it's ice or steam) at will (with the biggest limitations being that he has to make physical contact with his sister to activate his hydrokinetic powers and that the powers never last longer than an hour [plus he and his sister touching again before the hour is up deactivates the powers automatically]). He also possesses above-average stealth skills and is pretty quick-witted (despite some occasional accident-prone tendencies).

Sarista: Shape-shifting that’s limited to animal forms, but she CAN assume the form of ANY animal in the universe that she can think of, perfectly mimicking said animal's abilities in the process (even if it's a Kryptonian animal). Her primary limitations are that 1.) the shape-shifting ability always wears off in no more than an hour, 2.) she has to make physical contact with her brother to activate her powers, 3.) touching her brother again before their hour is up deactivates the both of their powers automatically and 4.) she also copies the weaknesses of the forms she duplicates. She is also an above-average paw-to-paw fighter and a competent strategist and tactician.

Both: In addition to a mild telepathic link rendering them each capable of sensing when the other is in trouble, the siblings each also have super-elastic tails (think Tail Terrier) and the ability to shoot out jets of an extremely foul-smelling liquid from spinets in their forepaw wrists.

Personality: Sarru is the somewhat more wiseacre and egotistical of the two, always quick with a quip (he's even worse than Streaky or Zipster in that regard), and he sometimes has a habit of making boasts he later proves to be incapable of backing up on his own. Despite this, however, he DOES have a pretty good heart, possessing a soft spot for innocent animals in trouble and a good loyalty to his friends and sister. He is also pretty valiant (enough so to willingly at least TRY to back up a lot of his boasts even if his efforts DO fail at times and enough so to never give up no matter how deep of a mess he ends up in).

Sarista is the smarter, more serious and more humble of the two, and is quite loyal, compassionate and brave. However, her principle shortcomings are a tendency to rely too much on her powers, her habit of jumping to conclusions and the fact that her compassion can outweigh her common sense.

Background: A pair of orphaned twin brother and sister lemurs from another planet where ALL members of their race had super-elastic tails and the ability to squirt out an extremely foul-smelling liquid from spinets in their forepaw wrists, Sarru and Sarista were also mutants (even by the standards of their race) who each possessed special abilities (Sarru being able to mentally manipulate the movement and temperatures of liquids within his immediate area and assume any water-based form at will, and Sarista being able to change into any other animal in the universe that she wished to and assume the animal's natural abilities) that they could activate by touching each other (from there, their powers lasted for one hour or until they touched again, whichever came first), but the natures of their abilities made them even more reliant on each other than simply being orphaned and HAVING nobody to rely on but each other did. Sometime in their youth, the alien twin lemurs ended up joining an intergalactic sideshow where they made their first real friends apart from each other and where they could use their abilities to entertain others instead of merely to survive. Even further later on, Sarru and Sarista, from assisting and sticking up for their surrogate family at every opportunity, discovered their powers also had real potential for fighting crime and saving lives (doing so every chance they got wherever their circus traveled). Later on, when it appeared that an unknown person or persons were trying to sabotage the circus’ shows, leading to several of the performers being hurt during one such incident, the help of the Dog Star Squadron was requested. The lemur siblings helped the heroes get to the bottom of the mystery. After the perpetrators were finally caught, Sarru and Sarista decided to return with the heroes, and joined the History Scouts (though they maintain close ties with their friends in the circus).

Thank you, Isaac. Now, here's another member of the History Scouts (who I can't believe I forgot about). He is based on two famous fictional martial artists, one of whom is a Hanna-Barbera character, and the other a member of the Legion Of Superheroes (the latter moreso). My thanks to Comickook and Catfan for their aid with this file.

Name: Pal Shee'lded (AKA Karate Canine when he reaches adulthood).

Species: Alien hound dog (sundry hound breeds, including beagle)/spaniel mix.

Description: A slim (think acrobat) but still very physically fit-looking (for a dog his age) hound/spaniel-mix puppy with mustard-yellow fur, white paws, a white muzzle, and light brown spaniel-like ears. Looks more like a hound in the face. Wears a red doggy gi trimmed with white.

Abilities: Well above-average (though not super-canine) agility and reflexes, which; combined with his natural knack for quickly learning any martial art he is shown or figuring out how to properly wield any weapon he sees operated; makes him an extremely good fighter for his age (both armed and unarmed) who specializes in martial arts particularly, including several alien-base combat styles; peak senses, particularly his sense of smell (not super-canine but still very respectable). Due to his young age, he can’t be called a super-fighter just yet (though he could indeed be considered just about that good by the time he reaches adulthood), though he is definitely THE most skilled combatant among the History Scouts. He is also a competent detective for his age (though not as good as X-Ray Dale)

Personality: Is significantly more serious then his ancestor Paw Pooch, especially when it comes to being a History Scout, and lacks his ancestor’s thick country accent as well. Tends to be abrupt and pragmatic, but not unfriendly, and is, in fact, quite brave and compassionate towards his friends and the downtrodden. He also has an immensely strong sense of honor and not only considers his word sacred but has a near-obsession with always fighting fair.

Background: Unlike many of his relatives, including his most famous ancestor, Paw Pooch, Pal doesn’t have any superpowers to speak of (he DOES have a natural knack for learning martial arts techniques and the safe use of various weapons, but this talent isn't developed quite to the point of qualifying as a superpower). Instead, he decided to train himself in self-defense, studying under several teachers. His training paid off and he became, for his age, one of the best fighters in the galaxy and yet, also one of the most honorable. As he becomes older, he takes on the alias “Karate Canine”.

    Name: Amun/Theftus

    Race: Siamese Cat

Powers: Although he doesn't possess the standard Kryptonian powers such as flight, super breath, or heat vision, his strength, agility, and reflexes are beyond that of normal cats. He also has received training in regards to being a thief and knows how to handle traps, get into places, and knows how to hack into computers.

Appearance: He has his father Streaky's build but he inherited his mother Isis's fur patter and green eyes. His collar bears an golden ankh, a gift from his mother when he first went on heists with her. Once he becomes a hero, he dons a black collared jacket. Atop his head he wears a pair of goggles.

Personality: Amun is a smooth talker. The kind of guy who would go through someone's stuff and use it to blackmail them later. He always remains cool under pressure giving off a smarmy sense of pride and a cocky little air. At times he can be a bit flirtatious in regards to females knowing what right words to say. He also has a large appetite, something he inherited from Streaky. Although he is not exactly a glutton, he can put away a lot of food.

History: Amun is the son of Streaky and Isis. Although his birth was far from intentional. One night in Gotham, Isis went into heat and by chance Streaky was in the area, and needless to say their animal instincts took over. Shortly afterwards they parted ways but soon after a trip to the vet, Isis discovered she was pregnant much to her dismay. She eventually gave birth to a litter. Most of them were given away but Catwoman kept one kitten. Although straddled with this new responsibility, Isis became optimistic at the prospect of her offspring inheriting Krytponian powers. However as Amun grew older, she noticed this wasn't the case. Nevertheless, she trained him not wanting a useless tag along hindering her, and she quickly discovered that his natural abilities exceeded that of a normal cat. When Amun came of age, he accompanied his mother on her heists becoming a thieving duo. Unfortunately Isis lost her life one fateful night. Broken, Amun struck out on his own and started dealing with the criminal underworld trying to make a name for himself. Often he contested Bathound. Time and time again they clashed until one day Amun was finally apprehended. However instead of being put away in Animal Control, he found himself in the ship of the Dog Star Patrol. Here he was offered a choice. Either be put away or join. Seeing his options, Amun decided that Animal Control wasn't in his best interest. And so it was here, Amun, the son of Isis, master thief, became a member of the Dog Star Patrol taking the moniker Theftus, and meeting his father Streaky for the first time.
