Episode Summary

EDIT
After Birkoff chokes in the middle of remotely directing an operation and is then promptly upstaged by arch-nemesis Greg Hillinger (who pulls the frying pan out of the fire and saves the mission), Operations promotes Hillinger to Birkoff's job and re-assigns Birkoff to his first field operation. Birkoff's mission is to infiltrate and perform reconnaissance on a mercenary terrorist organization "Soldats de la Liberté," run by a man named Jean-Marc Rousseau who employs brainwashing on young people to fill the ranks of his organization. Birkoff is convinced that Operation's real objective is to set him up with an impossible mission, so that Operations can eliminate Birkoff and permanently replace him with the more obsequious and pliable Hillinger. And sure enough, once inside the group Birkoff discovers ties between Rousseau's organization and the infamous Red Cell, and Operations refuses to extricate Birkoff preferring to leave him in place to gather more information. Can Nikita help Birkoff get out of the enemy camp before Birkoff is irreparably brainwashed by Rousseau? And is Operations really out to eliminate Birkoff?moreless

  • Superb episode and the level is brought even higher.

    9.6
When all the episodes till now have just rise the level bit by bit as the story just seems to get turns on... and this episodes adds so much for already high standards.

I am happy that we will have over long time period a Birkoff episode. The episode is really catching... the "bad" ones are really ... special, I would say.. and the position Birkoff finds him - feeling like not needed any more.. feeling like he is replaceable.. I think for long the only thing that gave his the trust for himself was knowing that he is needed.. because everything in Section is so.. moving.. chancing . and now.. he is one of those who could chance. He is sent to mission and Greg is working with is evil plan to get rid off him. And seems that the "bad" ones treasure Birkoff skills and he feels like needed. So.. it is not weird.. that other start to think that maybe he is gone over...

Really enjoyable episode, emotional and exciting.moreless

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Operations: (after Birkoff sems to betray Section, and Operatiosn orders his death) Birkoff's become a liability! Bring Jean-Marc in for debriefing, we'll proceed tonight.
Nikita: You can't do this, Birkoff wouldn't...
Operations: He's gone over, Nikita. Do you see any other way we can deal with this?
Nikita: I see that you set him up for this. You knew he was in over his head. You knew he couldn't handle it! So then you put him up there, and when he fails, you send Michael after him!
Operations: We have an operative who's turned. I see no further need to discuss it.

    • Nikita: (to Hillinger, when she learns Birkoff is on assignment indefinitely) If you had anything to do with this, and I mean anything at all, you better grow eyes in the back of your head.

    • Nikita: (referring to Operations) He doesn't like Hillinger.
Birkoff: Operations likes anyone who spins the world in his direction!

    • Madeline: Birkoff's not ready.
      Operations: He'll have to be.
      Madeline: And if he fails?
Operations: It's a chance I'll have to take.
Madeline: Failure rate for an operative of his status is eighty percent.
Operations: Well then I guess he'll have to beat the odds.
