Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • The terrorist group Kessler is working for in this episode is called The United Coalition.

    • Nitpick: It seems extremely unlikely that after Kessler stole the isotope in the "janitor" disguise that Nikita wouldn't have given Michael a description of the man they were seeking. Several operatives run right past him, but have no idea that they are looking for the "janitor"!

    • Nitpick: Madeline is much shorter than Michael, yet we are expected to believe that Kessler wouldn't realize the height discrepancy at the end of the episode when Michael is disguised as Madeline?

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Shellen: (when Kessler makes a flip remark as he's being tortured) Is that supposed to be funny?!
Kessler: (verbally shrugging) Humor is subjective.
      Shellen: So's pain.

    • Madeline: He cared enough to kill her. It was an act of mercy, Nikita. He was protecting her.
      Nikita: Protecting her? From who?
      Madeline: From us.
Nikita: How do you know what goes on inside his head?
      Madeline: I know.
Nikita: Does he know what's inside your head?
      Madeline: No.

    • Nikita: (responding to Madeline's question about what Nikita thinks her job description is) You tell us what to do, who to kill.

    • Madeline: My primary job function is to get inside the enemy's head, anticipate his next move, whenever possible.

    • Madeline: Sometimes I don't know if I'm still strong enough to do this.
Nikita: You're the strongest person I've ever met.

    • Madeline: We were fighting over a doll. I pushed her. She fell down the stairs and died.
      Nikita: Your sister?
      Madeline: Yes.
Nikita: But it was an accident, right? You didn't mean to...
      Madeline: I wanted the doll.

    • Madeline: (visiting Nikita's apartment) I've never been here before. It's not what I expected.
Nikita: Oh, well, what did you expect?
Madeline: Something a little more severe, a little darker. I like it.

    • Nikita: So, why are you here?
      Madeline: To remember.
      Nikita: Remember what?
      Madeline: Who I was.

  • NOTES (1)

    • Harris Yulin was listed as "Special Guest Star" in the opening credits. He first entered the mainstream as an actor playing a bad cop in the movie Scarface, and was a main cast member in the second season of the hit show 24, which Alberta Watson later joined during the fourth season.

    • The way that Kessler is masked to prevent him from biting and immobilized is strongly reminiscent of the incarceration of Dr Hannibal Lecter in the movie The Silence of the Lambs. Like Kessler, Lecter was able to escape from his bonds, but while Kessler was allowed to go free in order for Section to get the necessary information from him, Lecter truly freed himself and returned to his life as a serial killer.

    • Kessler: Yesterday I saw upon a star, a little girl who was not there. She was not there again today, gee, I wish she'd go away...
This line of dialogue contains elements of a poem by Hughes Mearns, which was also made famous by Ogden Nash. The poem is later used in the fifth season episode title "A Girl Who Wasn't There", which includes a hologram of Madeline.
