Andy Cutler is a boy bent on revenge against the men he believes killed his father. He strikes out to find that justice from the law or other means when he comes across Johnny Lancer working his ranch. Andy tries to steal Johnny's horse and a friendship begins to develop. Though, Johnny is exasperated by the boy's anger and obstinence, he brings Andy back to Lancer. Andy steals Johnny's horse again and Johnny tracks him down. This is when Andy tells him his version of events and that he is trying to hire a gunfighter to avenge his father. Johnny takes the boy home, meets his sister who has a totally different story of how their father died. Johnny decides to become his former persona of Johnny Madrid and hires out to Andy for the grand sum of about twenty-five dollars. Johnny begins cutting fences, shooting at the ranchers and making life difficult. He plays mind games with both ranchers Andy believes responsible for his father's death. Both men are frightened but, resolved to keep their ranches. Johnny makes each think the other has hired him to start a range war. In the end, the two ranchers come into town to face off against Johnny Madrid. It's then we find out the truth of Andy's father's death. It was an accident. Andy comes to understand killing a man solves nothing. "It's easy to kill a man but, it's impossible to bring him back to life again." Johnny tells the kid. This episode is a bit tongue-in-cheek as it shows most of this small town (including the sheriff) shaking in their boots at the mere mention of the name Johnny Madrid. But, it is the emotional apexes that make it such a fine episode. Johnny, at one point, tells Andy's sister he grew up hating and spent all his time learning to use a gun. "Some education' he says to her.moreless
