"CBS Mailbag" used to be coordinated by writer Gerard Mulligan, who retired from the show in 2004. When Mulligan left, a committee of other writers attempted to keep it going but ultimately decided to drop it. On top of that, the Late Show no longer accepts letters from the USPS, and only communicates with fans by e-mail.

I was just curious because on the recent shows, he hasn't done the CBS Mailbag. I miss his viewer mail, don't you?

Plus, as far as I've heard, Dave's show was the only show that gets "actual letters from actual viewers."

Also true, unless you count people mailing in headlines to Jay Leno.

The "actual letters from actual viewers" thing is a reference to a recurring bit on Steve Allen's Tonight Show, where he frequently read fake viewer mail.

I knew there was something semi-fishy about Dave's quote.

Actually that reminds me Dave was doing that "headlines" bit years before Leno, except he called it "Smalltown News".
