Launching Young Readers

Show Summary

Launching Young Readers is a nine-part educational TV series developed by PBS to share the most recent research and tips to the adults and caretakers, whether they are parents, grandparents, teachers, or siblings, who are involved in children’s lives as young children begin to take the steps to become readers. Each step of this series focuses on the unique aspects of learning how to read, from the earliest moments before children make connections to sounds and letters to the build up between writing and spelling to the ultimate goal of lifelong readers. While the focus is on strategies and advice parents can use to help their children, Launching Young Readers also discusses learning new languages, the challenges of disabilities, and the intricacies of the brain, especially when it comes to the varying ages of young children and the initial reading curve. The steps are given a heartfelt dosage of reality with snippets of young learners, their families, and teachers as they share what it was like to learn how to read.moreless
