Laverne & Shirley in the Army

Show Summary

This animated version of Laverne & Shirley borrows a good bit from the movie and TV series "Private Benjamin" in that it places roommates Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney in the Army (just like the title says). They wind up getting involved in clandestine escapades with their immediate superior, a pig named Sgt. Squealy, threatening to report them to his superior, Sgt. Turnbuckle. All usually turns out well for the girls.

This series was initially set to debut September 12, 1981 but it was delayed four weeks. ABC slotted in Scooby Doo Classics (repeats of Scooby Doo, Where Are You!) in the interim. Also of note, the words "In The Army" were not used in the title cards of the show. Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, stars of the live-action show, voiced their cartoon counterparts in the first season. When it was melded in with the Fonz & The Happy Days Gang and Mork And Mindy cartoon shows, the characters had new voice actors.moreless

  • This Is Probably The Reason Kate & Allie Never Had An Animated Series

Laverne and Shirley was a sitcom success from the 1970s that had no business being in animated form. Their boss, Sgt. Squealy, is as annoying as Scrappy Doo, made from the same Hanna-Barbera cloth. Even worse, none of the episodes in the animated series are set in Milwaukee, as Laverne and Shirley are sent around the world on their various adventures for the US Army. The charm and humor of the live-action series is MIA. Perhaps the writers took the "Laverne and Shirley in the Army" premise too far...moreless
