  • Finally, new episodes! This one, however, was not anything special, which is unfortunate as it's the season opener.

    7.0
Let me just start by saying this episode itself wasn't bad on its own merits, but it did employ one of my least favourite tactics: pretending former characters didn't exist. Last season, we saw Senior CP Steel resign, so we expected him to not be on the roster this season; however, the man who replaced Steel, as well as the rest of the cast, act as if the he has been on the show since day one, and no mention is made of him being the new bloke or replacing Steel or anything of that nature. Similarly, there is no mention of why Director Castle left the CPS or who his replacement is; again, a viewer who hasn't seen previous seasons might think he had been on the show since the beginning based on everyone's behaviour. The only slight nod to him taking over as Director is three short lines of dialogue regarding paint swatches on the wall.

That being said, this episode was about a patient that was being treated in the ED of a local hospital for a seemingly mild respiratory illness who suddenly and inexplicably died. Things quickly devolve into a confusing mass of conflicting information received from various employees of the hospital. Devlin and Brooks return as the go-to Detectives to investigate the patient's death, while newcomers CP Thorne and Director Sharpe team up with Junior CP Phillips to attempt to prosecute the individual finally deemed responsible for the young girl's death. Overall, it is a fairly straightforward medical malpractice-type episode, and most people familiar with other crime dramas should know precisely what to expect.

Not a bad episode, but not the start to the season I was hoping for.moreless
