  • Betrayal and Portrayal

    9.0
"Betrayal" often involves revelation of oneself or of others as well as resolution of various conflicts. The episode "Betrayed" contains wheels within wheels of murky revelations and resolutions: Goren and Eames are working back toward a more solid, more deeply honest relationship after his seeming betrayal of their partnership in an earlier episode. Goren is still working through his definite betrayal by the Department, his frequent betrayals by his brother, and the wrenching betrayal of his mother's deathbed confession that Goren might be the son of a serial killer. Captain Ross is betrayed by an old flame [a mystery writer/former cop] after going more than the second mile for her when he learns that she is trying to use him to cover her murder of her betraying much-younger husband and his married mistress, who is obviously betraying her own husband. And in investigating that dual murder, Goren and Eames discover that the Captain's old flame had had a previous betraying husband. . . whom she had, seemingly successfully, murdered for that betrayal. The writer betrayed friends, husbands, law enforcement officers, and, ultimately, any ethics which she might once have upheld. Nice insight into the Captain as a person and a cop, rather than as just a boss. Nice meditation on the types of, causes of, and potential results of betrayal.moreless
