Ex Stasis
AIRED:
When a young woman is shot during an unscheduled appointment, Goren and Eames investigate her death and learn she had received a kidney transplant a few years earlier. Initially, they believe Vanessa Nikos may have been killed so her organs could be harvested, but soon learn her death was more closely connected with the organ she initially received from living donor Boyce Wainwright. When her shooter, who is also awaiting an organ transplant, is found dead, the police realize they're onto something.moreless

  • A woman on an appointment to show her jewelry designs is gunned down, and the detectives believe her killing was arranged to harvest her organs. In fact, only one organ was the goal - her already secondhand kidney had a pretty hefty price on its head.moreless

Although the woman's donated organs are spread around to various hospitals, the critical slice is the kidney that was actually donated to the dead woman earlier. Goren and Eames believe the woman's husband had set the killing up, for money, and that the recipient's biologist son was his partner.

Then the gunman, whose ex-rays show he was in dire need of a new lung, is found murdered and Goren and Eames realize the case is even bigger than one simple organ motivated takeover.

Eventually, the detectives are led to the odd duck who had previously donated the dead woman his kidney. An obsessive 'giver', he soured on his recipient because she had chosen to take a more mundane route than the professional do-gooding he had envisioned for her. Giving away organ after organ from his own body to the 'deserving', the victim just didn't measure up to the stature of his beneficence. Only Mother Theresa need apply.

The writers took a neat turn with the ole body parts plot this time.moreless

    • Ron Carver: He gives new meaning to giving until it hurts.
Robert Goren: He gives because he hurts.

    • (After a suspect gives him an expensive pen.)
Alex Eames: You'll have to send it back to him.
Robert Goren: Yeah, I know. I just wanted to see how much he enjoyed giving it away.
Alex Eames: It didn't look like he enjoyed it at all.
Robert Goren: It's as if he was compelled. As if giving was serious business, deadly serious. I wonder how offended he would be if he knew his gift was being squandered?

    • Alex Eames: He's not saying much of anything anymore. Somebody performed brain surgery on him with a .357 Magnum.

    • Ron Carver: Wainwright's planning another donation?
Alex Eames: He's the gift that just keeps giving.

    • (After hearing one too many theories.)
James Deakins: I'm gettin' tired of sentences that start with "maybe".
