  • Eames has a case from her past come back to haunt her when a suspected wife killer is found murdered and mutilated. Goren and Eames must work with a new DA who was on the case that was botched many years before. The killer is a red head with a grudge.moreless

We get to see some background on Detective Eames in this episode. The botched case took place shortly after her husband Joe died. We learn that she and this ex-DA who has now just popped back up in the DA's office again after all these years were heading toward a romantic relationship when their case got derailed and the killer walked.

A pretty well put together back story set up to totally throw you off the the direction of who done it. The victim Boz Burnam was a notorious ladies man who was remarried all these years later. He must have had a change of heart because he spent the years following his innocent verdict helping others who are supposedly wrongly accused and had turned that into a lucrative multi-six figure a year job with the media. He is remarried as well. He is working with two other men who also take part in his yearly birthday ritual of swimming in the freezing Atlantic Ocean. One Craig O'Keefe has a tryst with a woman in Jersey City the night before and is drugged and left in a hotel room waking up too late to get down to the beach. The other Max is called at the last minute on a bogus emergency call to a hospital for his son being injured. So Boz is alone when he comes out of the water. We see a redhead in heels pull a gun and shoot him directly in the forehead at about thirty feet. They use very subtle hints in this episode to point you toward who dun it. I won't give it away here but I have to admit it was clever and a little weak at the same time. Anything I would say to explain that would give it away.

Unfortunately we have to see Eames dragged through the mud for really no reason. Even Goren and Ross are skeptical of her performance at times. It is one of the few episodes I have heard the other detectives mentioned. In this case Nichols and Wheeler are brought up to possibly replace Goren and Eames because of a possible conflict of interest in the case. I would highly recommend this episode as I don't think you'll necessarily know who did it until the last ten to fifteen minutes. Pretty clever but still a little far fetched. It's TV and they can get away with it. Thanks for reading...moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • In this episode, Raul Esparza plays Kevin Mulrooney, an ADA who had an affair with Alex Eames, one of the detectives who investigated a case he prosecuted.  Three years later, he would return to the franchise, on L&O: Special Victims Unit, playing Rafael Barba, an ADA who would have an affair with Olivia Benson, one of the detectives who investigated a case he prosecuted.

    • During the questioning of ADA Mulrooney, Goren refers to Carl Jung and the anima. Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist who studied under Sigmund Freud. Jung broke with Freud and developed his own Analytical Psychology which included the anima and animus. The anima is the feminine inner personality of the male and the animus is the masculine inner personality of the female.

  • NOTES (2)

    • When this episode was "repurposed" to the NBC network, it was inexplicably – and ungrammatically – renamed "Ladie's Man." This spelling was picked up by some of the listing services as well.

    • Original International Air Dates:
Australia – July 9, 2009 on Channel Ten
Czech Republic – June 8, 2010 on TV Nova

    • In the opening scene, Boz Burnham prepares for his birthday swim at the beach while his wife Martha cooks his breakfast. Burnham tells her she doesn't have to go to all that trouble to which she replies, "Sorry we're out of Jimmy Dean." She is alluding to country and western singing legend, Jimmy Dean's highly successful business that specialized in breakfast sausage. It now produces an array of breakfast meals, but it was his sausage that made the company famous.
