Jennifer Fulton is found raped and attacked in the restaurant that she owns with her husband. When she identifies a young man that she thinks was responsible, the Detectives of the Special Victims Unit find that he in fact was not the attacker, but her husband was. When Jennifer attempts to bring charges against her husband, they find that she is pregnant, and wishes to have an abortion. When her husband takes her to court in order to prevent her from having the abortion, she changes her mind and decides to see the pregnancy to the end. After that, her husband takes her back to court to ensure that she is locked up and can no longer harm the child with her alcohol addiction. Jennifer is ordered to stay sober until the baby is born, but when she breaks that ruling she finds herself facing the possibility of being locked up until she gives birth.

This is a good episode. It is nice to see what lengths people will go to in order to help an unborn child. It makes me wonder why they don't give more rights to an unborn child.moreless
  • A pregnant woman is assaulted in a bar, and SVU detectives must sort through the lies to find the real perpetrator.

    9.3
I love episodes like this one, where the audience spends the entire show wondering who is lying and who the bad guy really is. A woman is found lying on the floor with a head injury in her bar. She claims that someone tried to rape her. She first implicates a young man with a grudge against her, then changes her story and claims her husband did it. When she decides to have an abortion, her husband drags her into court to try to fight it.

She subsequently decides to keep her baby, and Olivia recommends counseling. The counselor advises the woman, Jennifer, that she must stop drinking or she could cause serious damage to the baby. Jennifer swears that she will, but then her husband, Craig, takes her to court again to have her locked up so she can't drink while she's pregnant.

Olivia finds herself overly involved in the case, attending counseling with Jennifer and trying to intervene to keep Craig away from her. He threatens to call witnesses, and when Elliot and Olivia check them out, they discover that Jennifer had another child with fetal alcohol syndrome when she was much younger. Olivia and Elliot had to tell the court, so Jennifer is ordered to appear at rehab.

Olivia goes to talk to Jennifer and finds her drunk, so she arrests her for contempt of court. It is fascinating to see the interaction between Olivia and Jennifer. Olivia is highly trained to be able to tell when someone is lying, but she is completely duped by Jennifer. Jennifer is found not guilty of contempt of court at trial, but she is ordered to present herself for rehab the following morning. Olivia finds her parked outside the house of her previous child, and Jennifer makes a turnaround. The episode is very exciting because the whole time you get the sense that Jennifer is lying or withholding the truth, and Olivia just goes along for the ride. But finally, in the end, she manages to get through to Jennifer and make her understand the damage she is doing to her child.moreless
