  • A Weak and Abrupt End to Two Major Characters

    4.0
Hmm. Seems like the show tried to top last season's finale of "Screwed" where everyone on the squad was in trouble. Arresting the newest detective and disbarring the ADA characters was hard to swallow. There was nothing in the season that set up these issues for the finale episode. If this cold case was so important to Lake, then the show could have had other squad room characters notice the file on his desk or see him working late when they'd already solved the latest case. And good riddance to Novak. She was a weak carbon copy replacement for the amazing ADA Alex Cabot.

Bringing in a shoot out between cops over a cold case could have been very dramatic, but the main players in that crime were taken off screen and all the dialogue was given to the squad room cast. What a way to take all of the passion out of the episode. Everyone condemns Lake and it turns into a watered down manhunt. Why not keep it between Lake and Finn with Lake saying he doesn't know who to trust since he's trying to convict a dirty cop? It would add tension.

Overall, I just don't feel disappointed at Lake's arrest. He's only been in this one season and we still didn't get to know him very well before we see him in a desperate situation with a bad ending. Novak's career ending move was more dramatic, but again it just seemed abrupt. We haven't seen her lose case after case and finally resort to evidence tampering just to win one more time. She's very successful at her job so this desperation comes out of nowhere. It's a very weak episode and a terrible season finale.moreless

  • The Ballad of Casey Novak and Chester Lake.

    4.5
Casey Novak - once a prosecutor who had a 77% case closure rate. Reputation tarnished for a brady violation. I feel sorry for her that she's gonna be suspended, but I think this time off will do her some good. Maybe get more sympathetic toward some suspects, (lets remember she didn't initially want this assignment, Arthur Branch thought she'd be perfect). When asked what she should do, I wanted to say 'think about what you've done and ask yourself this: was it worth it?' Chester Lake, well all I can say about him is we didn't need to bring in another detective, I like Munch and Finn better together as partners. In a way justice was done: the rapist is dead and the other one was killed in a shootout. That may not be the justice we approve of, but at least they will never do it again.moreless
  • We finally get rid of Det. Lake

    8.5
This episode marked the end of the road for two of the main characters: - Detective Lake and ADA Novak. Lake is found to have shot dead another cop, and gets arrested. He gets taken to hospital. The trail takes place and Casey gets in trouble for a technically. She gets told that she is going to be suspended over it, for possibly a year of more and that she should start looking for another job. She gets paged and leaves in tears. Her and gang go and find the rapist has been killed by Lake. Who is still in his suit, from the trial. They watch on as he is arrested and taken away. The police drive off and the team are still standing there in disbelief over what has happened.moreless
  • SVU is supposidly the more caracter driven of the L&O franchisees, but the caracters frequnetly appear to have no more depth than needed for the particular episode and this is a fine example.moreless

    6.0
SVU has never been my favorite of the L&O family and particularly as they drifted away from the team approach to focus more on the two detectives, Benson and Stabler, and instead of fleshing them out seemed to make them more wooden and steriotypical. This episode seemed to exemplifie how they play loose and fast with the caracters development all of a sudden we have deep seeded conflicts within the squad that we haven't seen a peep of before but just happen to make this story move along and fill it out.

Still inconsistanceis a staple of SVU, case in point ADA Novak. Suddenly she's in trouble for a technicality (all be it a serious one) when her actions in the previous episode directly resulted in the death of the murderer and a inocent suspect.moreless

    • Casey Novak: What are you selling, Bret?
      Bret Smith: Criminal Defense.
Casey Novak: Yeah, hard to imagine.
Bret Smith: You've worked sex crimes longer than most and you're still passionate, we need you.
Casey Novak: Yeah, well, it's harder to care when your clients are guilty.
Bret Smith: Ours are accused of SEC violations, not diddling some 4 year old on the playground.
Casey Novak: Look, I'm sorry. I have to go.
Bret Smith: No more late night calls, no more rape victims and dead kids. How do you sleep at night?
      Casey Novak: I don't.

    • Casey Novak: How much trouble am I in?
      Judge Donnelly: Censure. Possible suspension.
      Casey Novak: For how long?
Judge Donnelly: A year. Maybe more.
Casey Novak: (starts to cry) What should I do?
      Judge Donnelly: Something else.
Casey Novak: (quietly) Oh God. (gets a text message) I have to go. (walks out of Donnelly's office)

    • Casey Novak: (angrily) The reports weren't finished, Your Honor! I sent them back!
Judge Donnelly: You lied to Petrovsky and now you're lying to me. The lab reports were dated and stamped! We are all civil servants, Casey! No one is falling on their sword for you! (pauses) What I want to know is why.
Casey Novak: (calmly) Because the bad guys can't always win. He deserved to pay.
Judge Donnelly: And so do you.

    • Casey Novak: With all due respect, ma'am, this doesn't concern you.
Judge Donnelly: It does now. (hands her a file)
Casey Novak: I'm being called before the bar.
      Judge Donnelly: At my insistence.
      Casey Novak: Why?
Judge Donnelly: Because you lost perspective. And because I sit on the peer review board and I cannot allow you to commit a Brady violation and lie to the court without consequence.

    • Casey Novak: You wanted to see me, Judge Donnelly?
Judge Donnelly: Yes. The um, the DA is declining to refile charges against Thomas Krane.
Casey Novak: He raped and murdered Alissa Hernandez and he gets to keep his badge?
Judge Donnelly: Because of your actions, Counselor.

    • Captain Cragen: Tread lightly. Everybody is already heated enough.

    • Fin Tutuola: What's going on in Philly?
      Chester Lake: Really good cheesesteaks.

    • Chester Lake: Are you interrogating me, detective?
Elliot Stabler: No. I'm watching you drown.

    • Elliot Stabler: (about the press) When cops shoot each other, clowns come out. It's entertainment.
M.E. Melinda Warner: What's got him riled?
      Olivia Benson: Guilt by association.
