Episode Summary

EDIT

Doug Waverly and Nick Pratt are charged with rape and murder in the disappearance of Canadian student Jennifer Durning after Nick's cousin, Jason King, claims that while he had consensual sex with her that night the other two raped her. A stray pubic hair leads Novak to Keith Willis, a drunk who was paid off by the boys to get Jennifer out of the hotel and who later saw the boys kidnap her, but Willis isn't exactly fit to be a witness as his mind has deteriorated badly after years of alcohol abuse. Jason King disappears. Although they are able to find a bug in Donnelly's office, they are not able to prove that it was placed there by Pratt or Waverly. Judge Donnelly is forced to dismiss the case against the two boys since there is no case without Jason's testimony.

  • Best episode in a long time

This had to be the best episode in a long while in my opinion. The guys were smug and rich and you wanted them nailed. I could not believed that girl was so stupid as to plant a bug in a judge's chambers. Pulling the guy's body out of the river was kind of a shock. I really didn't think they would kill him.
  • Wow....Great show last night on Law and Order SVU.It was so great.I recorded it on our DVR and watched it again this morning.Seems like this was the first time Casey Novac really got emotionally involved with a case.It was interesting to see this side ofmoreless

The story line for Law and Order SVU last night was awesome.I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.You know how they always do the first preview of the show and you get a just of what happened.Well when the show started and SVU was arresting the boys from school and stopped the plane from taking off.I had to glance at my clock to see if maybe I had gotten in the middle of the show or what. This an awesome show but this season has been really, really good so far.I'm looking forward to the next show.moreless
  • really good stuff

Wow, what a great episode. I was on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed seeing Novack and Judge Donnelly interact. Also loved the bugging of Donnelly\\\'s office. Just a really really good episode. It was a very nice twist to the usual procedural that sometimes gets a little tired.
  • I believe that this is the worst SVU I have seen in a long time.

    5.4
The episode was quite obviously inspired by the Natalee Holloway disappearance, however all that connection did was make the show too bland and predictable. While the acting was as good as ever, the story line seemed too unoriginal, which can obviously be explained by all of the publicity surrounding Natalee Holloway’s disappearance. This publicity also contributed to the outdated feel to the plot; we all knew what was going to happen, so where was the excitement? There was none.

The most compelling part of the episode, however, was how upset A.D.A. Novak obviously was over what had happened to Nick. Beyond that, there was nothing.moreless
  • It was HORRIBLE.

This is like...the worst episode I\\\'ve ever seen. EVER. They seem to be making worse and worse episodes these days. They hardly even SHOWED Mariska Hargitay (her total airtime in that episode must have been almost 5 minutes! Wow!). The plotline was okay, but it wasn\\\'t wonderful. I, personally, hated it.

    • Judge Donnelly: That liquid lunch isn't going to change what happened.
Casey Novak: Yeah, but it'll help me forget.
Judge Donnelly: You played the hand you were dealt.
Casey Novak: I had to look Jennifer Durning's parents in the eye and tell them that their daughter would never get justice, because I let Nick Pratt and Doug Waverly get away with murder.
Judge Donnelly: Well, that wasn't your fault. But it will be if you let them get away with another one and don't try to stop it.
Casey Novak: We haven't found Jennifer, so what makes you think Jason's gonna be any different?
Judge Donnelly: Because whoever planted that bug in my office knows what happened to him. And you are going to find that person if you have to interrogate everyone who works in that courthouse. Trial's over, Casey. Put the gloves on for round two.

    • Judge Donnelly: (about to render her final decision) For six days, the People have offered dozens of witnesses and exhibits. And the only rational conclusion this evidence supports is that the victim, Jennifer Durning, was alive and well when last seen with the defendants. Therefore, as a matter of law, this court has no choice but to grant the defense motion. Mr. Waverly, Mr. Pratt, I am dismissing all charges against you. You are free to go. (bangs gavel)

    • (Cragen finds Novak looking out the window in tears after hearing the news about Jason's sudden disappearance)
Casey Novak: I told Jason everything would be okay.
Donald Cragen: You don't know for sure that it isn't.
Casey Novak: We both know something bad happened to him. He trusted me, and I let him down.
Donald Cragen: Beating yourself up isn't gonna help us find him any faster.
Casey Novak: You're right. This gets out, I won't have a case. We have to keep it quiet.
Donald Cragen: What's the next move?
Casey Novak: I have to tell the DA.

    • (Cragen and Novak are watching as they pull Jason's body from the river)
Captain Cragen: You didn't kill him, Casey. He was dead the minute he got caught in cousin Nicky's web.
Casey Novak: We have Jason's body, let's get him some justice.

    • (TARU is in Judge Donnelly's chambers looking for a planted bug)
Judge Donnelly: Casey never told me Jason's location. She wrote it on a piece of paper which I shredded after I dictated the information.
      Ruben Morales: To your secretary?
Judge Donnelly: To my dicta-phone. (her voice comes on a speaker phone) My secretary hasn't transcribed the tape...yet. Is that me?
Ruben Morales: (finds the bug) I'm afraid so.

    • (arresting Nick Pratt and Doug Waverly at a restaurant with their parents)
Doug Waverly: You can't prove we killed anybody.
Detective Stabler: You like that sea bass? You're gonna love what we just pulled out of the river.

    • (While looking through footage from the toll booth cameras.)
Fin Tutuola: All the exhaust and filth dirtying up the camera lens -- how do these faces and plates come out so clean?
John Munch: How does a spy satellite see you taking a crap from 22,000 miles in space?

    • (Casey Novak is drinking alcohol in a restaurant.)
Elizabeth Donnelly: I prefer shrimp cocktail for an appetizer.
Casey Novak: This is the entree.

    • Nick Pratt: We have to stand up to the morals police. (Olivia Benson walks in and handcuffs him.) Hey, what are you doing?
John Munch: Hi, we're the real police.

    • (Branch and Novak show up at Donnelly's home late at night.)
Arthur Branch: We need to talk to you.
Elizabeth Donnelly: In the middle of a trial? I don't think so.
Arthur Branch: The defense had their ex-parte moment.
Elizabeth Donnelly: In chambers, not my living room.

  • NOTES (4)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • John Munch: (watching Willis on the elevator's camera) Check out Luca Brasi.

Luca Brasi (played by Lenny Montana) was a hit man who worked for Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) in Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 film, The Godfather.

    • This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the Natalee Hollway case. Natalee Holloway was a teenager from Alabama who disappeared while on a post-graduation trip to Aruba on May 30, 2005. One of the primary reasons Novak gives for the three boys being under suspicion is a video tape showing the girl with the boys before she disappeared, a key piece of evidence that had surfaced in the Natalee Holloway disappearance not long before this episode aired.
