Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

Season 8 Episode 6

Aired Wednesday 9:00 PM Oct 31, 2006 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • This episode features a doctor named Richard White. Richard White is also the name of the man who stalked and tried to kill Detective Benson in the episode episode "Stalked".

    • Goof: When Porter and Olivia are in the car together, when the camera is on Olivia's face the first time, the door is unlocked. When the camera switches back to Olivia talking for the second time, the door is locked.

    • The scene in the court room is one of the rare occasions where Benson is seen wearing a skirt.

    • Nitpick: Britney was supposedly kidnapped when she was ten years of age. It is unlikely she would have been able to drive Dunford's car since she had not left the room since then.

  • Quotes

    • Deputy Trudi Minehart: Ma'am, you're under arrest for assaulting an officer.
      Olivia Benson: What?!
Deputy Trudi Minehart: You have the right to remain silent.
Olivia Benson: I never assaulted anybody!
Deputy Trudi Minehart: Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Olivia Benson: I was the one assaulted!
Deputy Trudi Minehart: You have the right to an attorney.
Olivia Benson: I know my rights.

    • Elliot Stabler: Where is she?
Dr. George Huang: I don't know
Elliot Stabler: Then tell me who does, I'll talk to them.
Dr. George Huang: I can't do that.
Elliot Stabler: Are you playing company man with me, Doctor? I'm not going to give away state secrets, I just want to make sure Liv is safe.

    • Attorney Kressler: No cop ever planted evidence before?
Casey Novak: Not this one and you know it. She's a decorated detective with a spotless record.
Attorney Kressler: You say tomato, I say motive for revenge.

    • FBI Agent Porter: Your partner back in New York, does he find you as annoying as I do?
      Olivia Benson: We're best friends.

    • (Porter watches as Britney circles the room.)
FBI Agent Porter: Isn't it making you dizzy? I'm getting motion sickness.

    • Olivia Benson: What was the cause of death?
Sheriff Bartley: Well, we're not sure which one of the stab wounds was fatal. But I do know we're looking for somebody with a penchant for freeing willies. If you know what I mean.

    • Delray Mellott: My name is Delray Mellott, and I'm your assigned public defender.
Olivia Benson: What are you, 12?
      Delray Mellott: I'm 25.
Olivia Benson: Oh, this is great.

    • Casey Novak: Look, I just need her for a day. In closed court.
      Donald Cragen: (sternly) No.
Casey Novak: Come on! She can't be thwarting arson plots everyday! For all we know, she's got some down time right now, and is bored out of her skull!

    • Casey Novak: Hey, captain! Elliot around?
John Munch: He just went out on a call with Dani.
Casey Novak: Well, I need to get in touch with Liv.
Donald Cragen: Forget it. He doesn't know where she is.
      Casey Novak: Do you?
      Donald Cragen: Nope.
John Munch: Word in the conspiracy mill is she's out having my love child.

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Sheriff Bartley: I do know we're looking for somebody with a penchant for freeing willies. If you know what I mean.
This is a ribald reference to the 1993 Simon Wincer film Free Willy about a boy who tries to save an Orca whale from being put to death.

    • John Munch: (about Olivia Benson) Word in the conspiracy mill is she's out having my love child.

A tongue-in-cheek reference to the real-life pregnancy of actress Mariska Hargitay. The storyline of Benson going undercover was used to explain the absence of the actress while she was off on maternity leave.

    • This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the Natascha Kampusch case. Natascha was kidnapped in Vienna, Austria at the age of ten and held hostage by Wolfgang Priklopil for over eight years before escaping on August 23, 2006. Priklopil committed suicide shortly thereafter.

    • Hope: Deputy Abu Ghraib tried to brain you for helping T-Bone.

Hope was referring to the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, where several Iraqi detainees were photographed being degraded and abused by American soldiers.
