Parts of this case appear to ripped from the headlines of the News of the World hacking scandal that rocked the United Kingdom in 2011. The tabloid was accused of hacking the cell phone of Milly Dowler after her abduction in 2002 in Surrey, U.K. Messages in the voice mail box were subsequently deleted by reporters or their private detectives, giving her parents and police hope she was still alive, until her body was found six months later. News of the hacking led to public outrage that resulted in a House of Commons select committee inquiry, the arrest of various News of the World editors and employees, the closing of this newspaper and the current independent judicial inquiry, the Leveson Inquiry.
