      • Briscoe: Hey, Kreskin, how'd you know he was on the Lower East side?

Lennie is referring to The Amazing Kreskin, a magician who maintained a television show about psychic predictions in the 1970s.

      • The oft-mentioned XYY syndrome is an aneuploidy of the sex chromosomes wherein the human male receives an extra Y chromosome. The belief that individuals with the 47,XYY karyotype were more prone to criminal behavior than other individuals spurred on a series of books and television shows purporting this idea, including the episode By the pricking of my thumbs ... (part of the British series Doomwatch) a series of novels about The XYY Man by author Kenneth Royce. The chances that a male will be born with the 47,XYY karyotype are approximately 1 in 1000.

      • Mark Ferris: (to Claire, regarding Pollit's juvenile record) From what I've read, Chris Pollit should be riding the ferry on the river Styx.

In Greek mythology, Styx is the river that leads to the underworld of Hades, where people go after death.

      • Ben Stone points out that Richard Speck's lawyers tried (unsuccessfully) to blame his violence on an extra Y chromosome. Richard Speck went on a killing spree in Chicago in 1966 and murdered eight student nurses. He eventually died in prison.
