      • McCoy: Stacking sandbags. You learn that from Neal Gorton?
Ross: I learned what defense attorneys are capable of. Mercer's halfway to an acquittal! We lose in state court and the Feds can't touch Salva! He's gonna be free because we passed up on this opportunity. Think how that will play in the media!
McCoy: No wonder Adam likes you!

      • McCoy: You want to bring in the Feds, you talk to me first!
Ross: So, this is a pissing contest!
McCoy: In my office, we don't hand off the ball, we run with it! Maureen Rankin was killed in our jurisdiction, prosecuting her killer is our responsibility!

      • Jamie Ross: I believe in monsters and things that go bump in the night, Jack. May they rot in Hell, along with their attorneys.

      • (Detectives looking for a murder victim)
Lennie Briscoe: Hi, is Ian Rankin at home?
Susan Bayer: He'll be back this afternoon, he's flying back from California.
Lennie Briscoe: He reported the car stolen?
Susan Bayer: No, I did, I'm their babysitter. You found it?
        Lennie Briscoe: No.
Susan Bayer: What about Mrs. Rankin, she didn't come home last, she teaches at night school. I called Mr. Rankin in California. He told me to call the police but they said she wasn't a missing person until she's been missing for a day.
Rey Curtis: Okay, Okay, slow down, what's your name?
Susan Bayer: Susan. Susan Bayer, so I called Mr. Rankin back, he told me to report the car stolen. He said the police pay more attention to cars than people.

      • (The perp covered the victim's face with a sweater.)
Rey Curtis: Maybe he didn't want her to catch a cold.
Lennie Briscoe: Yeah, let's put a warrant out on my mother.

      • (Talking about Claire Kincaid.)
Jack McCoy: You know, a few weeks before it happened, she wanted to quit. I talked her out of it.
Lennie Briscoe: Yeah, well, I coulda kept walking past that bar.

      • (After listening to McCoy's reasons for not wanting to work with Jamie Ross.)
Adam Schiff: I like her. So will you.

      • Mrs. Galvez: They didn't say that on the news! You're lying!
        Rey Curtis: I'm a cop. I don't lie.

      • Lennie Briscoe: You're up to your little patootie in a death penalty case. You talk to us now, or you're gonna spend your honeymoon on death row.

      • (After being thrown through a door.)
Victor Driscoll: Hey! Watch it! I got very sensitive skin!

      • Chuck Rodman (after realizing that he had only been brought in to scare Anna Galvez into testifying against Fernando Salva): So what am I? The dog or the pony?

    • NOTES (1)

    • ALLUSIONS (3)

      • This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the murder of New Jersey schoolteacher Kathleen Weinstein in Toms River.

      • The title of this episode, "Causa Mortis", is a Latin term meaning "cause of death."

      • Rey Curtis: Who do you think you are, Claus Von Bulow?

British socialite Claus Von Bulow was convicted of trying to kill his wife by an overdose of insulin in 1982. In 1984 his conviction was overturned. In 1985 he was found not guilty on all charges. His ex-wife is still in a coma in a New York hospital.
