Arrival of the new D. A. and the trial of the loving mother who killed her son

This is one the moving episodes in which you can ask yourself whether the defendant should be really found guilty and punished, or whether he/she has not been already punished enough. The desperate mother can't care of her son anymore as he has grown violent and too strong for her. She refuses to put him in some state sanatorium and at one terrible moment of him having a seizure, chooses not to give him a medicine. Then she sets a fire and tries to commit a suicide lying along with her child. Only love for her daughter wakes her up. Those facts are revealed during a mother's moving testimony at the trial. The jury are shocked, as well as Jack McCoy who then refuses to go down for a manslaughter, although knowing the jury will never find her guilty of murder. I have to say myself, I believed her. And I like the way it showed the very human side of Jack's personality. Nora understood it and Abbie eventually also did.moreless

Young boy died in a fire. Son had developemental problems and resp. problems Paint thinner spread the fire. Young boys dad is a painter and a cook. Paint thinner is on mom's clothes. Mom says sons door was shut, but burn marks on celing proves door was open. Mother says she was asleep when fire broke out but the bed was made up. Woman admits she started the fire, but w/ reason of insantity. Woman says son was already dead when she started the fire, b/c she didn't give him his medication. In reality he was only in a coma. He died from smoke inhalation.moreless

This episode shows one of the few times that McCoy cracks and gives a lighter sentence to a guilty suspect.

The police investigation is rather mundane and doesn't reveal much, other than finding lighter fluid on her nightgown.

When the woman confesses that she lit the fire to kill herself, McCoy cracks and realizes that she is in fact telling the truth and she thought the boy was already dead. He lets her go on a lower sentence. The actresses performance is very convincing.

The snazzy defense lawyer provides good comic relief for Jack. He quotes: "No, he's an idiot!", in response to Abby's: "It could be that her lawyer isn't the idiot we think he is".
